Magnificent! Its been a long time since I've been in a battle with anywhere near that many 54's. This looks great.

These are great to see. I have just received a large box of various 54mm Napoleonics to augment my initial foray a few years back. Cavalry and artillery remain the gap, so conversions will be the order of the day.
What I haven't decided on yet is how to base them - as in, how many to a base, and how many to a unit. Coming from 1/72, my initial thought was to go for 4 bases of 8, double ranked, to a unit (probably using Sam Mustapha's Lassalle rules). But I see that most people use far less to a unit (Eric's wonderful Helmet blog notwithstanding), and often they are individually based. So I wondered what the thought process behind each choice was?

Hi Marc,
I understand your dilemma. When I started to think about 54mm Napoleonic gaming when I saw the Victrix figures, I had the same thoughts. Seeing the Victrix 54mm game at Salute a few years ago, I saw that they organised very much like 28mm gamers - about 24 figures to a unit.
I then began to think that this was asking rather a lot considering the time it would take to paint the figures (my mate won't paint this scale, so I had to do both sides) So I opted for 10 figures for the Brits (1 figure per company) and 12 figures for the French (2 figures per company) and 6 figures for cavalry.
I then came across Dirk Donvil's About Bonaparte rules and saw that he organised his units as 8 figures for an infantry unit and 4 figures for a cavalry unit. It took me ages to go down this route, but now I'm glad I did. The 8 and 4 figure units look right on the table and I'm now organising all my units that way. The rules are also fun to play.
Hope that helps?
Best Wishes Dave

Well, that is definitely a way to go Dave, so yes, it does help. Does it finally settle the question - well, no, not yet. But all input is useful.
And you are right, the Victrix game was lovely to look at, so I guess that has influenced my initial view. I am slightly concerned by a game where it looks like a few mates have found a flag and are wandering around with it - I see this sometimes with 28mm units, where there are 12 figures, which include a mounted colonel, an officer, standard, musician and NCO.
Have you pictures of one of your games I could look at please?

Hi Marc, First thing to choose is what type of game you want to play. skirmish or, like Dave and I do, battalion size battles. OLd foto's can be found on the Hät archive: www.hat.com/Othr7/Donvil01P.htmlmore info: sites.google.com/site/aboutbonaparte/home/linksOur games last between 2 and 3 hours, which can also be a concern (not wanting games taking too long) , or preferring using a lot of parameters, games taking a day. For figures, indeed I did a lot of converting over these about 20 years I ' been playing with my 54mm figures. For me, making my own orriginal figrues by convertion gives also a lot of fun. Cheers Dirk

Wonderful to see these big battles in 54mm. I have large ACW armies but cannot find like minded folk here in Kent UK worse luck. Regards AL

50calibre, you'd be very welcome to put on a 54mm ACW game at the Woking games day in March...or perhaps we could book a venue for a one off large ACW battle sometime? Cheers, Anthony.
