I am a newbie to WW2 in 54mm. In fact, despite growing up on WW2 movie and TV shows, I have not collected figures in any scale for WW2 until recently. I decided to concentrate my collecting efforts on Operation Market Garden, upon which one of my favorite war movies, A Bridge Too Far, is based. I am using Britains Deetail for the British infantry, but for heavy weapons support I turned to Airfix. The box of 1/32 Airfix Infantry Support Weapons includes two men kneeling, firing bazookas, which I duly painted up and included in my headquarters section at a game yesterday (photos to follow). I played with several wargame buddies who are better versed in WW2 weapon minutia than I and they wouldn't allow the figures onto the table, saying that the British never used the bazooka until well after the war. Looking around the internet, that appears to be true. The British relied solely on the PIAT. My question is why a normally historically accurate company like Airfix would include unhistorical figures. It's not like they are an American company who might be clueless about British weapons.
Can anyone recommend a source for 1/32 PIAT armed figures wearing the steel helmet? I do have some PIATs for my Airborne troops.
Cheers, Nick Stern

Nick,
You have my sympathy! I am in the same boat as you re 1/32 British WW2. Not even Irregular Miniatures do a PIAT in their 54mm range although they do make one for their 42mm range. I have absolutely no idea why Airfix made such an error. In their 1/72 range they provided correct anti-tank weapons for the Germans but again not for the British....
Best wishes Anthony

Hi Nick,
Many thanks for that! I'd never seen those particular figures before. My only qualm is the very large bases but it might be worth bidding for them anyway just to get a PIAT...
Best wishes Anthony

Add to the list of crimes, that Airfix never produced a similar box to go with their German infantry. Was Airfix ever a friend to wargamers every whim?

Nick - I would get some new friends :-) That seems harsh not to allow them - I would play with them, treat them as PIATs until I found replacements, and not worry.
With 54mm, there can be a degree of compromise needed (as I am finding with my Napoleonic figures)

Marc,
I like your way of thinking! For some reason, the WWII players in my club are real sticklers for detail. I start to roll my eyes when they begin quoting armor thicknesses down to the millimeter - from memory!

Nick You need new friends more urgently than you need new figures! That said, the set on eBay is a good find - I have ordered one. And while I’ve not yet attempted it I suspect a PIAT would be a pretty straightforward scratchbuild.

Having followed this conversation, I have a request. If anyone happens to have any British Bazzookamen they don’t want then please let me know. I have a use for them. Similarly does anyone know of a German Infantry equivalent model?

Hi all. Another newbie here. I have got hold of the excellent 21st century prone piat figures. I use the Airfix Brit. bazooka men as US airbourne by doing some head swapping and plastic surgery!
Regards
Alan

Hi Alan, I have just bitten the bullet and ordered a set of the 21st Century British with PIAT-I may try and remove the figures from their scenic bases when they arrive.
Cheers Anthony

Good for you Anthony. I use mine with my British paras. I have fitted many with red berets now. Mostly Airfix but the 21st Century look pretty good. I have some full sets. Also the running panzerfaust figures and some US airbourne. Lots of their tanks and vehicles which I also like.
Also working on me glossies!
Cheers
Alan

It all sounds good to me Alan! I managed to get some WW2 German Britains Deetail figures off ebay that had been converted to Panzerfaust and Panzershreck operators last week.
Happy New Year! Anthony
