Hi - promoted by Mike's Portable Wargame table at Cavalier have decided after some time lurking at Funny Little Wars and other sites to take the plunge and stick my head above the parapet with this forum. Been a wargamer for over 40 years and also a collector and dabbler with Britians hollowcasts and more recent makers offerings so it seems a logical step to get back to putting the toys out on a table. Some of you may remember some of my display games put on too many years ago with hollowcasts on a table of Axminster carpet! Here's some of my Army Red figures - I also have some 500 plus ACW plastic figures - mix of Britains ACW Swoppets, Deetail, Herald, Marx and a load of other manufacturers. I also run the odd display game and my most recent 54mm one was for Salute 2016 - the theme originally was H G Wells but they changed it after I had started the project! The link is to the VBCW game we put on there: www.tapatalk.com/groups/vbcf/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4302&p=39926&hilit=salute+2016#p39926Intend to sort out a Portable wargame set up - Home Service Brits versus a French Colonial Force (till I can sort out some more suitable and cheap European foes) Based on the South Coast - Sussex - anyone local? Atb - Tim

Welcome - glad you made it here.
Looks like a great collection of "toys" - what rules have you been using for ACW?

LOVE the idea of using 54mm for VBCW! I've always looked on AARs of that game with ill-concealed jealousy and never even considered that I could re-purpose WW1 and WW2 54s for the same.

The mix of old school Airfix /Matchbox and Armies in Plastics newer stuff works well - I admit I don't go too hardcore on kit - using toys to play a game not rivet counting - and it allows me to put out Spode's Blackshorts from Jeeves and Wooster using 8th Army chaps. Here's another link to bits from there: www.tapatalk.com/groups/vbcf/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3561&p=33191&hilit=little+wars#p33191Mike - should I admit in the day to actually using H G Wells rules for my ACW stuff - after all if you have 8 or 9 Britains firing Napoleons it would be churlish not too! Not sure I would want to be loosing shells off nowadays - and I never used my Union Gatling gun to it's full effect! Atb - Tim

It would make a very good "Bring and battle" game for a day where everyone brings a couple of units for a large multi-player game... Mike

Mike, Tim,
Having been inspired by various VBCW 54mm blogs just today I ordered various VBCW source books from North Star including the SW England campaign book. My preferred faction would be the Anglican League..
Cheers Anthony

Mike - have sent you a PM on the bits and pieces - thanks for your help.I could have just picked out a starter Army from the toys at home but want to try another build project.
Spirit - I have been involved in the VBCW scene since the start - using 28mm stuff mainly - Salute 2016's theme was originally H g Wells - Little wars which kickstarted my 54mm project - they then changed it to steampunk without telling anyone so I went with what we had planned anyway. I did both sides for the game and worked from the sourcebooks for basic set ups:
Regular Army - figured these chaps would be in the Gucci kit - so went for Airfix / Matchbox WW2 British - they would have just gone into B/D Territorial Army - used AIP WW1 lads - still in 08 webbing and puttees Anglican League - went with mainly AIP WW1 French, American WW1 and German WW1 and a few others in the french blue surplus supplied to the Anglicans Militia (for both sides) - Mix of odds and sods but mainly used AIP Boers as a good source of civilians Spodes Blackshorts - had to have some "baddies" so went with Wodehouse and used Roderick Spode's chaps from Airfix and Matchbox 8th Army
Picked up a few others along the way - some Airfix Italians stand in line and in the paint pile are some Airfix Australians and some Bren gunners destined to be converted to Boyes anti tank rifles when I have nothing else to do with myself!
We use some very quick play basic skirmish rules developed by the club over some 60 VBCW games in our campaign just change the cms to inches and away we go. Enjoy it and any advice I can give on the genre let me know - atb Tim

Tim,
Thank you very much for such an incredibly helpful reply. Your tips for figures to use are very useful and I will them as a guide to collecting my forces. Now I must hope that my usual sparring partners, Brian and Mike will pile in!
Many thanks Anthony

Ive played a few VBCW games with friends (but in 28mm rather than 54mm). Great fun and perfect for a large themes game day.
Sounds like this might be a great Forum project!

oops I introduced myself in the wrong thread two years ago. I've just come back into 54mm figures and gaming after a hiatus. I've been looking for a forum to start a 54mm Star Wars thread as there is not nearly enough about this on the net. I've tried TMP and LA but I think this forum fits the bill better; great that there's a 1/32 dedicate site.
see you on the boards
