(Mike can you sticky this?) Those royalists on the wrong side of the Atlantic are showing us colonials up! They've already held an awesome 54mm Games Day and we haven't. But I say we remedy that. Who's local to the great North American continent and wants to roll some dice and knock over some (correctly sized) toy soldiers? Ross has already said he'd be willing to help out, and I can as well. I'm located on the Eastern Seaboard (DC area) and I know Historicon is coming up July 12 - 15 in Pennsylvania. Could be a good opportunity to coordinate a games day around an already existing event (and pop over to the Gettysburg Toy Soldier shop on the way home). Any other ideas?

aduck, Historicon would be a good venue, especially now that its back in Lancaster. A side trip to the Gettysburg is a great idea. The one fly in the ointment is that registration for games closes in 3 weeks which is not a lot of time to get anything organized and talk to one of the organizers about grouping the games or running perhaps a series of games on 1 table. I REALLY wish I could come down to Lancaster for Historicon both the dates and location are perfect for me, there's just no money in the kitty this year for me to blow close to $1,000 bucks on travel and accommodations for a 10 day wargame holiday.
The minimum requirement to get table space is to stage an event for a minimum of 6 players for 4 hours but that could be a series of small games rather than 1 single game or some mix. The GM has to be an HMGS member but gets free entry and joining can be done when submitting the game.
My recommendation would be to start small. Register one event that we can 'talk' up on social media, make some flyers about a 54mm day and use the occasion to try to gather a core of people to organize a bigger 54mm event later in the year. I haven't been to Historicon itself (vs Fallin or Cold Wars) since they moved it to Fredericksburg but over the last decade every HMGS con has had at least a couple of 54mm games registered so they no longer attract the sort of attention they did 20 years ago so some talking up and advertising would be important to go beyond.
Another option, less hurried would be to either target Fall In for the first event or go for one of the smaller events such as Barrage which the HAWKS stage in Maryland in the fall.
I'm not sure who on this list regularly goes to Historicon but I know there are some 54mm gamers on the yahoo group who do go so once there is a plan we should canvass them for interest as well as various FB groups.

I'm in California and can't attend H-con this year. But I would be interested in planning a virtual North American 54mm Games Day this year. I can provide figures for at least a couple of games, especially if we choose a weekend date. Maybe we can link up via a live feed. The future is now!

Interesting idea Nick. What did you have in mind?
I have played games by skype and google hangouts but never with more than 2 sites.
I've also played games involving players as wide apart as East and West coast of NA and also Australia and the US by a combination of emailing photos and orders back and forth. These were done over a few days but in theoru could have been done in a couple of hours if players dedicated the time and if time differences were accounted for in planning.
I suppose if multiple games were arranged for the same day and everyone posted pictures and reports here pregame and every few turns, it might feel a bit like a con.
Love to here more ideas about a virtual con. I like the idea.

I am very interested. I attend all the HMGS conventions in Pa. I have lots of WW2, Napoleonics, FIW and ACW in 54mm.

This is very forward-looking and hypothetical, but I am curious who here would find it feasible to fly to say, Oakland or San Francisco (Las Vegas, even, which is a hub with cheaper airfare, after all), and stay a weekend at an airport hotel to play some 54mm games. I'm assuming there would not be very many of us so we could easily use a small business conference room/meeting room (that would either not cost much or could even be free) or if someone got a suite we could even use that as the "gaming hall." I guess this is aimed at western U.S. and Canada gamers, and I'm just also curious who's "out here" and relatively close?
Also curious as to people's experience with transporting a couple pounds of metal toy soldiers in your carryon luggage!

If it was far enough ahead into 2021 I might combine it with a trip across the pond myself from Scotland. It was a plan when I had a big birthday in March to visit America and Canada...

I'd be open. I'm actually moving to Denver next month so Vegas wouldn't be too far away, and I've been there before for conferences.

Ten to twenty years ago I would have been good to go.
Alas, even without Covid and quarantine after travel, early retirement on half pay and health issues means no more 2k$ vacations for me.

I have done it twice for Historicon putting on 54mm games at both, and I have air miles I could use for fares but am now at the age when I am not so confident I could cope!

I live under five miles from SFO, so count me in. If this becomes a serious possibility, I can look into hiring a local hall.

Also curious as to people's experience with transporting a couple pounds of metal toy soldiers in your carryon luggage! I’ve flown with 28mm and 40mm metal soldiers in various carry-on parcels. Mine are usually magnetized in transparent Really Useful Boxes, so curious TSA agents can peek before and after the x-ray machine. I haven’t experienced anything other than some interested curiosity so far. (Fingers crossed) After the pandemic, it might be possible...

Speaking of air travel, a nearly irrelevant anecdote.....after having had a bad (not major) experience with excess baggage, I usually travelled with the most fragile/favourite figures in my carry on.
On one trip there was a pause as security scanned my carry on then called for her super. As they consulted I heard one say quietly in a mystified tone. "It looks like horse?". I of course gave my approval for them to open it and they were just delighted with the painted figures.

I would be interested in attending. I could pop my lads in the trunk, so no worries there, and could add Sikh Wars, Abyssinian Campaign, Wild West or *ahem* Dr Who to the mix of games on offer.

Resurrecting thread as I plan to go to Historicon in July this year to collect the Jack Scruby Award and would love to meet up with some fellow followers of the dark side - and play a game or two even. Anybody US members planning to be there?
