The short answer is the grid size and playing area can be any size you want. I think Bob originally began with a board 8 x 8 squares, the squares being large enough to fit whatever scale of figures he was using. I think he then went up to 12 x 8 squares to give more opportunity for flanking manoeuvres. Personally I'm going for 9 x 13 squares as I am using various command and colours scenario maps for my games where possible, see my Isandlwana set up for example.
