It's time for me to start putting bases on my WWII figures. I thought I could get away without basing them and there are some good reasons not to, like wanting to put the figures inside half-tracks and houses. Unfortunately, the Airfix and Matchbox figure bases are too unstable for all but the flattest surfaces, and I intend to throw a lot of debris scatter on my game table, especially around ruined buildings. What do other 54mm WWII gamers use? I'd like to base my weapons teams, like mortars and machine guns on muti-figure bases, but I want to avoid those bases getting so large that they won't fit neatly on the table. I hate the look of bases sitting astride building walls because they won't fit inside. How do others handle them? Thanks in advance, Nick Stern

I've just finished basing up several units of WW2 Russians (Airfix, Atlantic, Marx and Italieri) I put individual figures on UK 2p coins or washers then cover with premixed filler to hide the original base line and then flock. The weight of the metal and filler give the figures lots of stability on uneven surfaces and the rounded edges of the coin/washer seems to take up much less space than square edged bases. Some of the heavy weapons, like mortars, and command units are mounted two to a base, for these I use MDF ovals, again covered with filler, the larger base makes them very stable and again the rounded edges seems to take up less space. Hope this helps.

My figures are based individually on mdf - mostly 30x40mm. Each with a piece of magnetic sheet underneath. For Little Cold Wars and it’s related 20thC derivatives I have platoon sized stands cut from thin steel sheet (10x10cm).
