Thanks to pilum40 I got totally sold on All the king's Men just in time for Ken to close up shop. Since then I've been getting some 54's after I found a box of AiP Zouaves on clearance at a hobby store. Learning the ends and out of soft plastic as well as 'the dip'. As a change from doing 15's and 28's I'm finding I'm really enjoying dipping into a new scale. Probably be quit awhile before my 54mm AtKM version of Gaine's Mill is ready but it is under way. Probably go lighter on the dip next time but it's all a new learning curve. As such the AiP had flaking issues with the primer that I'm not having on the Marx recast figures. Post dip and seal I don't think they'll be any issues but I'm not sure if I like the glossy effect even after being toned down by matte sealing.
And the work continues onwards and upwards. Fourteen figures at a time.

Those barely base coated Union soldiers have reached the first stage of completion. Base coated and 'dipped' in the gravy.

They are looking good. I personally prefer shiny, glossy toy soldiers in 54mm...

Plugging along on the ACW project. Steady rain has fouled any work on sealing or priming more figures. At least that means I'm painting the cannons and caissons I primed up but would normally probably put to the wayside for more interesting figures. Matte spray and highlighting to come but the 54's just keep rolling on.
Can't quite explain how much simple FUN I'm having with the project. Now I do have some figures I got from Hobby Lobby... BMC is the brand I think. It's like hard/soft plastic. I don't know how to explain it except to say the figures have all the drawback of both hard AND soft plastic. I'm going to see how they mix as the scuplts are pretty flat and ropey. If they don't quite work out I'm out a whopping $12.00 so no tears will be shed on that one.

Okay, took the finished unit out for pics just cause. 1st Michigan Infantry for All the King's Men. Stopped raining for the drive to work but supposed to start pouring by the time I get off so work is still cannons for the foreseeable future.

Thank you, sir. Work continues as I shifted gears to try some of the BMC plastics I got from Hobby Lobby. These figures are really flat in pose and lacking detail of the Marx and Accurate figs. I'm sure they'll rank up fine but I'm left a little nonplussed by this range of figure.
Work will keep rolling on as I switch up to artillery crew and Berdan's Sharpshooters for the next group after I get these troops finished and put to rest.

I think that BMC figures are very cheap and cheerful and don't really compare with other makers for sculpting or moulding...

Mike, you're absolutely correct. They'll do the trick a little when mixing them into the ranks. After all, by the time I'm done I'll probably have enough figs painted up that nothing will stand out much. More work as a chug along. Some caissons, an artillery wagon in progress, Berdan's Sharpshooters, and whatnot.

Finished the first element for Berdan's Sharpshooters over the weekend. Working on finishing those BMC figures and getting leery of mixing them in with the Accurate and Marx figures. Figure there will be so many figures on the table, who will notice right?

A little update cause I'm still plugging away at the Union side of things and mercifully close to the end and can start on the Confederate forces. Honestly I'm having great fun with the figures themselves but... I want to play a game with them.
Last unit completed, Massachusetts Volunteers for the table.
I hate to say that I'm already thinking about 2020 being the year of Napoleonics in 54mm. Still got plenty of work to do for ACW but I may well stick with the 54mm scale for a little while longer. It's fun, affordable, and honestly looks really impressive on the table.
Just glad to be a part of this community and growing this aspect of the hobby.

Those old Marx sculpts look pretty impressive painted up. Another trick for shading is mix floor wax and colored ink. More wax gives a lighter stain ect. Sepia ink is my go to color but you and experiment to get different results. The gloss then matte clear coat takes the shine down to a satin-like finish.

Cavalry has been done up and work on the leaders has begun as i get close to calling the Union forces wrapped up.
Just knocking them down one unit after the other. I need more cavalry but honestly it's not as much of an issue with ACW as AWI or Nappies. This puts me up to 10 units of line infantry, three units of sharpshooters, three units of artillery, and one cavalry. After finishing the Confederate units I may go back to add more units but that is dependent on the recpetion I get when running this at various conventions this year.

Most effective looking figures. I look forward to to seeing them on the battlefield. Have you decided definitely on which rules you will use?
