All the King's Men is the front runner. Been playing that with a friend for years now using his AWI collection and it was the real motivator to do up a 54mm ACW set. Rules are easy to learn/teach and make for a good convention game but still have enough tactical bite to keep me coming back. We tried out Rebels and Patriots from Osprey using the 54mm AWI figures and weren't too smitten with them honestly. Honestly haven't dipped my toes to far around ACW rule sets. I remember playing either Rebel Yell or Brother Against Brother ages ago but heck, it was so far back I was fresh out of playing Dungeons and Dragons and was decidedly befuddled by it all back then. If there's suggestions I'm all ears.

Works in progress of the Union generals and last artillery unit. Waiting for the weather here to clear before hitting them with the matte spray and doing the finishing touches on the figures. Then it's onward to the Confederate side of things. Count down to the first convention is July so I really do have to step things up in the coming months.
Hopefully spreading the good word of how much fun 54mm is will catch on. Not holding my breath that much but still.

I'd forgotten about a Gentleman's War, went ahead and ordered it cause I've always like Whitehouse's rules. Been a long time since I ran Astounding Tales at any of the conventions. We'll see how it pans out when it arrives. Tell Howard he owes you a drink for a sale.

Confederate forces are started. Finished up three units of Artillery that works for either All the king's Men or A Gentleman's War. Really, really sold on A Gentleman's War by the way. The game really reminds me of All the King's Men but has a few extra bells and whistles I REALLY like.
Figures are made up of Toy Soldiers of San Diego, Marx, BMC, and Armies in Plastic. Just primed 24 skirmisher/sharpshooter figures yesterday that will be beginning shortly.

Those barely base coated Union soldiers have reached the first stage of completion. Base coated and 'dipped' in the gravy.

Thank you. It's just hot glue from the Dollar Store. I just hit the bottom and then run a line around the base to 'grip' it cause it's a mechanical bond and we know how those are kind of weak. When I'm done with the white glue and sand at the end it's pretty sturdy with a mix of mechanical and chemical bonding.

Bob, i tested white glue, rubber cement and some other stickum stuff and they all seemed to work ok at least for three days. My problem was the cavalry. Spackle seems to have fixed that. The base is wood. The spackle goes up over the hooves.

I picked up a few of the BMC sets from Hobby Lobby with the 40% off coupon while doing this project. The figures are cheap and cheerful and coming with a few cannon and caissons doesn't hurt anything at all. I've been freely mixing everything for this project only really had a problem with one line that was more around 48mm, just too small to mix with the other figures.

Sometimes the poses might be a bit awkward but from three feet away who notices. Both armies tend to have the same poses, just in different colors. If it weren’t for BMC, i would not have any cannon.

And the next stage of the figures that are now tucked in to be highlighted and completed. Should be just a couple days and they'll be settled in and I can start on the next batch of figures.
Nice to be moving on the project with some decent progress. Worry sometimes I'm going to stall out or be victim of hobbyist attention span.
BMC is a decent way to build up. I also take advantage of the Armies in Plastic sales and there's a 2 lb mix n' mathc bag of figures the Toy Soldier Company offers that is great for building a bulk of line infantry.
