I have been playing with how to base up my Napoleonics. Initially I had planned on 80mm bases with 4 figures a base, 4 bases per unit. However, this would mean a line occupied over a foot on the table and that I would struggle to fit my standard 12 units a side for a game even on an 8 foot table... So, latest thinking is to chop some of the bases off the figures and base to 60mm x 40mm with 3 figures a base: A couple of quick photos of a test french unit - still need to cast up a eagle for the flag when I find the mould... I think this works... Some of you will remember Andy Duff, who used to post on these forums as Strawberry5 and who died last December. I have just purchased Andy's Napoleonic collection from his widow with a view to selling it on to people who would use it. But I am now thinking about keeping it and using it as a basis of a large 54mm Napoleonics collection my own... Mike

I base my Napoleonics per your original plan, but I agree this new way works. It's a good compromise between, what I believe is, the too sparse recommended basing of "About Bonaparte" which suggests two figures to a base and your original 4 figure to a base, 4 bases per unit. One thing about the 4 base system, it works well with Commands and Colors Napoleonics, which generally has four chits per infantry units, though sometimes three or, very rarely, five.
Cheers, Nick Stern

HI Mike,
Your basing looks great-sadly very different from mine! I have been basing my Naps for use on 5inch squares with Bob's forthcoming Napoleonic version of his Portable Waragme Rules, so a unit is two bases each of three foot with each base 80mm x 400mm.
Best wishes Anthony

Try Beermats. Usually 4X4. Spray paint them Oregano green and rubber cement 8 infantry to a mat. Two mats gives an 8 inch frontage of 16 soldiers that looks just splendid to me! Two guns and 6-8 crew makes an artillery unit, six cavalrymen make a regiment. Will be running a Blucher game this weekend with 9 corps- about 600 figures.

I base my figures in the way Dirk Donvil does in his "About Bonaparte" rules. I wasn't sure what to do at first (I had 10 figs for British regiments and 12 for the French).
However, I discovered Dirk's rules and came round to his way of thinking.
I mostly use Victrix figures (but am now also using Expeditionary-Force to fill in the gaps, especially cavalry), and some of these bases can be on the large side, si I couldn't use Dirk's base sizes.
I use the following: Infantry 8 figures, each figure on a 40x40 base Cavalry 4 figures, each figure on a 50x100 base Artillery whatever looks right!!!!!
Best Wishes Dave

How do you differentiate light troops, riflemen or skirmishers in your respective basing methodologies ? Thanks Alan

Hi Alan,
For my lights I base them separately on round bases (40mm).
I feel this looks right, marks them out as being different to the line troops and gives that feeling of space between figures making them look like they're on skirmish order
Best Wishes Dave

I have some formed French lights based 3 figures on a 60mm wide base. For skirmishing units I base 2 figures on a 60mm wide base...
