small bit of progress on my rebel commando helmet. I used a matchbox british commando head as a base. Haven't quite got some of the angles right but pretty close I think. I will mould and cast up a test head soon Attachments:

thanks you guys still a bit of tweaking to do around the soft cap part but I'm pretty happy with the donut part. Quite hard to see the detail with that colour putty might have to use a grey one next time.

ok here's my first real attempt to sculpt something in 54mm (my power droid doesn't count really). I used sculpey and apoxie sculpt over a wire armiture. The sculpt is a rolling comedy of errors to be honest but I learnt a bit about the materials and some techniques. I need ALOT more practice but overall I managed to make a complete figure and it's not too out of place:) I added a grip to its right hand for a blaster or staff or whatever. I may mould this guy so I can make a few more for conversion Comments and critique most welcome. My next sculpt will be a rebel commando helmet (back on target). I'd like to keep making SW aliens that cannot be bought to create a few more options Excellent bit of sculpting especially with the type of putty you started with. Last time I tried that type of putty I found it was far to flexible for handling and seem to take an age to harden up enough to be able to get down to sculpting in the detail. I'd say the scale is about right.
Making a mould of the Head ,hands and feet would make it easier to produce another one or two of these guys .You wouldn't need many as they don't appear too often in the Movies or Comics. The body can be any leftover plastic figure body and should make it a quicker process as you will have something solid to add the moulded pieces onto. You will be sculpting a new uniform/outfit on anyway and with a separate body you could create a more active pose if required. The other reason is that making smaller moulds is sometimes easier than trying to duplicate an entire figure successfully.

I will mould and cast up a test head soon This is looking good, it's not the way I would have gone but we all look at projects in a different way, I would have gone with a WW2 US Army Helmet head and carved down to get the shape , it is all in the way you look at the problem
A small tip , not that you need it is to create your new head with the head still on the original body, this gives you a solid platform to work on and gripping the figure instead of a wire makes things a lot easier. Once your new head is completed then cut it off the body.
Have you seen the range of DORLING KINDERSLEY Books on STAR WARS Ultimate Visual Guide series ? They are fully illustrated with photos and diagrams of all the costumes and equipment used in the movies. Since DISNEY took over the franchise they did individual movie books , so naturally the ROGUE ONE one is he best. It has a great section on the Rebel Troops, showing each individual Scariff Commando, one actually looks like a WW2 British paratrooper in a Denison Smock. Looks like three basic head types - the one you are working on , a Covered WW2 US Helmet with added armour and a soft Afrika Korps style peaked field cap with ear flaps.

hmmm I do like them very EU star wars. Dog/ camel head Might have to try a sculpt or convert a tehnolog figure Hey Les I got the wrong side of the war graphic novel. Like you say some great reference material there gave me an idea for a rebel scout unit (all wearing poncho's) and also of course more imperial army I thought that you would like 'the wrong side of the war'. The little details in the background show what could be used to create a SW type environment. Lots of Ramps, Grates and black and yellow tape.

Thanks Les yeah that putty doesn't stick particularly well to the heads and like you say is quite soft but it managed to cling to the side of the donor head well enough to muck about with. Sadly my sculpting doesn't include making heads at this stage I'm thinking I'd like to make a few rebel troopers with poncho's and a few without similar to the commandoes in ROTJ. Hand moulds are a good idea I hadn't thought of that!

yes good idea! I had the head left over from another conversion and there was a bit more detail in the face than the airfix WW2 GIs so I made do. I'd like to get that Rogue One visual guide they did a good job of blending in some the earlier (later) uniforms

so I found this on the rebel legion site looks useful. newsite.rebellegion.com/costume-standards/rogue-one/Seems to me like there are 3 potential units that could be made: Rebel commandoes (endor style) Rebel scouts (poncho wearing rebels like Luke and Leia on ROTJ and the graphic novel wrong side of the war, also WEG figures Rebel pathfinders (marines) mixed uniforms like on rogue one. These guys rifles seem a bit bigger than the regular ones Making 3 distinct units like this would them easily recognisable

bit more progress the head cast came out ok but doesn't photograph very well. Overall the figure is working for me a paint job will help Can't decide what to do with the weapon though; the vinyl on these guys is super slippery nothing sticks to it. So I may have to leave or replace is outright but I think it works as a rebel commando proxy figure

I'd agree that definitely works!
Could you build the gun out using a pin plus some putty perhaps? Rather than trying to glue something to it?

I'll wait till the unit is finished and see how things look cheers!

Not my photos. Figures are a dark priest and slave girls, manufactured by a company called warhansa.
The slave girls are a clear fit for Jabba's palace of course. And the priest is almost exactly like Naga Sadow, Dark Lord of the Sith.
