First test figure of a new 40mm project - AWI. I managed to pick up a lot (a lot!) of Front Rank AWI figures for £1 each recently and want to get them on the table fairly quickly so this is a test of a fast paint job...

Figure looks great, what a bargain to get.Do you have any thoughts re rules? I am looking at starting with the Osprey Rebels and Patriots set as it doesn’t need too many figures, only 60-70 a side. Then, A Gentleman’s War, Loose Files and American Scramble and eventually the Fife and Drum rules for big games...

Looking good Mike, especially as When I saw them this afternoon they were still only undercoated in red. Your figure doesn't look like a fast paint job to me, more a quality paint job. And thanks for the Boers!
Alan,
We discussed Andy Callan's Loose files and American scramble as well as a Gentleman's War; no doubt Mike will come up with other options too. His newly-acquired collection has inspired me to contemplate 40mm French-Indian Wars...

Strangely enough l was contemplating 40 mm awi myself recently but decided not to take the plunge at the moment. The French Indian wars are a fascinating period. I have been playing it regularly recently with a game a fortnight. We have played about eight or nine games using Muskets and Tomahawks. Initially the jury was out regather but they have grown on us and give an exciting game. Well worth a look for AWI also. Do you have any range in mind?

£1 a figure!!! Must be the deal of the century Mike. Lovely figures. I've been tempted by 40mm ever since I collected Gringo40s US-mexican war figures.
I know this is out of our scale, but has anyone seen the WoFun games new figures. 2mm flats made of Plexiglass in 28mm or 18mm. A ready painted army for a reasonable price. I backed the Kickstarter as I thought they were lovely figures

I backed the Kickstarter as I thought they were lovely figures I have seen them and I know that Anthony was tempted. Personally, I found the photorealistic faces a little too creepy! Also, they use the same 5-6 faces so have figures with the bearded face in peiods where the soldiers wouldn't have had a beard. I know, I am being picky! They do look a neat idea for collecting armies for fringe periods...

Alan,
I haven't decided which range(s) to use yet. I know of Sash and Saber and Trident but I need to work out some costings first! I have always been tempted by 40mm and can think of other periods that I would love to do in this scale too.
Dave,
I am definitely tempted by Wofun Games. I missed the kickstarter but have subsequently subscribed to their newsletter and will be purchasing one of their collections when the ranges become available for general retail.

Anthony,
I like the Sash and Sabre figures very much and Trident are also good. Have you thought of Front Rank - very nice figures indeed, although some might think they're a little chunky.
Also, if you like (having backed the Kickstarter for WoFun and so will definitely be getting the figures), I can send you some of the WoFun figures to look at before you buy any so you can decide if you like them in "the flesh". Let me know. I think they're aiming for July/August for the release.
Best Wishes Dave

Dave,
That's very kind of you-thanks! Although I understand Mike's comments (he's right about the beards!) personally I was very impressed with what I saw on the website and am willing to take them on trust when it comes to ordering. I'm really itching to get Wofun Games Waterloo 'Battle in a Box' set when it comes out; visually it looks much more impressive than the CC:Napoleonics blocks and 2D card terrain approach.
Best wishes Anthony

Anthony,
I think they're producing the battles in a box as add one later in the project, but not sure when.
Originally it was all tied up with the Kickstarter and the 2 battle boxes were going to be produced when certain monetary goals had been hit with the project.
Unfortunately, they didn't reach the higher levels of backing, so although there was enough backing to start the figure productions, they didn't get enough monetary support for the box sets.
But on one post, they did say they would produced as a separate item some time in the future.
Not sure why such a good project didn't get more backers, although quite a few backers (myself included) only stumbled on the project by accident. There were some comments that suggested the whole project wasn't promoted enough and was perhaps badly organised.
I see what you and Mike mean about the faces, but the organisers said that the faces on the figures were slightly oversized because, once on the table, they looked right and effective
Best Wishes Dave

Dave,
That's a shame. I would have heavily invested in the kickstarter had I been aware of its existence in time. I only found out about it when Mike saw a mention on TMP and alerted me to it. Hopefully Wofun Games will sell enough figures via retail that they will be able to re-visit the Battle in a Box sets in the not too distant future.
Best wishes Anthony
