I was musing today about The Portable Wargame and the fact that cavalry can flank attack an infantry unit fairly easily because the Portable Wargame has no Zones of Control. You can move from a square directly in front of an infantry unit to a square that is diagonal to the infantry and then onto the flank in one move. Other grid games I have seen use the concept of a ZOC which means if you are adjacent to an enemy unit's front, you can only move either to attack or straight backwards away from the enemy unit.
You can protect your flanks in The Portable Wargame as a cavalry unit could not move into a square that is to the front of another enemy unit in the above example but The Portable Wargame does make cavalry fairly powerful in terms of flank attacks.
I don't have a problem with this in the Portable Wargame but wondered if ZOCs complicate things or make the game more realistic?

I think ZOCs work perfectly well with grid-based games where it is easy to determine who's in whose ZOC, but not so much in non-grid based games where it can be a bit ambiguous to determine.
