We played a Waterloo game in 54mm yesterday. We used the Neil Thomas Napoleonic rules. As in the real battle, the two sides were pretty evenly matched with the French enjoying a slight advantage in artillery and cavalry. The French advanced all along their front and one unit of French Line Lancers made straight for the British on the crest of the ridge. The Lancers almost made a breakthrough, which would have required two Anglo-Allied units to leave the field, chasing after them, but they were stopped by British volley fire. On the French left, many units were drawn into an assault on Hougoumont, as happened historically. Also, as historically, the British sent their heavy cavalry down the slope to break up the French infantry attacks. The Scots Greys were destroyed when they were unable to retreat while the Royal Dragoons and Household Cavalry were more successful and bet back the French columns to their front. On the French right, Dutch infantry in Papelotte held the Allied left and beat back French attacks. On their left, the French were able to do better then their historic counterparts and took Hougoumont while the battle continued back and forth in the woods. In the center, French heavy cavalry counter charged the British heavy cavalry and that combat continued for several turns without a decisive conclusion. The Household Cavalry especially distinguished themselves holding off the French Dragoons and Cuirassiers. By turn twelve it was evident that the French attack had been blunted everywhere except for Hougoumont and we called the game in favor of the Anglo-Allies. Since we did not represent the arrival of the Prussians, the French were able to retire in good order.

Now that's impressive. An amazing looking game, Z! Just curious, are those armies owned by your club or a single person? (My mind always starts boggling at storage issues!)
Thanks so much for sharing.

For better or worse, they are all mine, the result of five years of collecting. I found most of them already painted on eBay. Storage is a challenge since I switched to the larger figures. I have a full 7X7 foot shed and a two car garage that I will never be able to park my car in.
Once you're known for collecting an unusual period or scale, fellow gamers let you know about collections going up for grabs. This weekend I am driving 70 miles to Sacramento to look at a collection of painted Prussians. If I buy them, I can do Waterloo properly with the Prussians' arrival.

Very nice indeed. Thanks for posting the photos. I do re-enactment and took part in the 200th anniversary battle in 2015 (I was on the French side). Awesome.
What a great scale. Can I just check your unit sizes. Are cavalry 12 figs and infantry 16? I use Dirk Donvil's ideas with 8 inf and 4 cav figs per unit.
A great display and wish I could have seen the Battle you put on in person.

Thank you for the kind words. The cavalry are only 8 figures and you're correct, the infantry are 16. I own Dirk's rules and used them to play Quatre Bras a couple of times. I just could not get used to visually accepting eight figures make up a battalion. But I play C&C Napoleonic with my 54mm figs and somehow I'm okay with four figures in a hex equaling a battalion. Go figure. I should go back and try Dirk's rules again. I did enjoy rolling the special dice.
Any time you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, give me a shout and we can play a Napoleonic game. This offer applies to all LWR members.

Hi Nick,
I appreciate the answer. You have an impressive collection indeed! Thanks also for the invitation, though must say I'm even more attracted by your Boxer and WWI trench-fighting collections. And if you or any other members ever come down Los Angeles way, open invite here as well. I can host Sikh Wars, Abyssinian Campaign and Wild West in the Big Scale. Dr Who is also battle ready, but I gather that would be a harder sell for some!
Keep up the great work, and best of luck with those Prussians!
