Nobody has started a 20th century or moderns 54mm thread yet - I was feeling sorry for this board.
One cheap source of WW2 and modern figures are pound stores and party favour suppliers. They may not be as well moulded as the originals but they provide bulk figures or conversion potential at discount cost.
Erratically soldier types range from the following: Airfix copies - quite commonly are selections from German Infantry, Japanese Infantry, Afrika Corps and British Eighth Army
Again Matchbox figures (now unavailable) reappear in copy form, usually the ever present American WW2 infantry as the archetypal green Toy Army Men from various suppliers like Hawkins Bazaar/ Tobar. Matchbox Eighth Army, Japanese and Afrika Korps and German also sometimes appear jumbled in pound store or toy soldier bucket selections.
BMC US marines (distorted pirate copies) occasionally appear.
Lots of modern US infantry / gulf war / desert storm type figures around.
Tip - buy them when you see them as they aren't usually available for long.
It is mildly entertaining trying to name that figure or work out what range it is copied from.

So far I have stuck with Airfix for my 54mm WW2 and British Cold War collections and Esci for my 54mm Warsaw Pact army.

This is all marvellous stuff. I have several tubs purchased very cheaply from Tesco. Around smaller than 54mm and a mixture of airfix and matchbox copies. More LMG figures of all kinds than can be managed !

Thanks Chris for the Tesco tip off I shall keep my eyes out for them - sometimes they turn up in the party favours aisle of supermarkets or you can collect and base lots of those party bag parachutist figures. Oh the simple joys of cheap plastic tat! Mark manoftinblog.wordpress.com

Dear Mark, I spend a frightening amount of time in all sorts of shops that a comfortable middle aged man should not be in looking for toy villages, vehicles that can be "repurposed" or otherwise scavenged and animals of any kind.I am now immune to the funny looks that this lurking attracts. The joy of finding something that can be used is special ! Mr Quantrill appears an expert in this some of his finds are magical, the recent African woman for example.
