Yes, like Mike I would like to do something different for the next Woking Games day, but if we can do Fort Pippin one more time at the LTS that would be great. It will show 54mm collectors that they can use their figures for something other than display purposes!

Well Pippin Fort has already got me thinking of a gridded portable wargame that would allow me to make use of my Normans indoors on my kithen table.

I loved the pictures of your Relief of Pippin Fort game at Woking. Unfortunately, now I've retired to Wales visiting such shows in future is out of the question (it is actually cheaper to fly from Cardiff airport to Crete than to catch a train to London!).
I'm very keen to create my own version of the game, but in a smaller scale to fit on a coffee or card table, so would be very grateful for details of the Orbats and any modifications you made to the Portable Wargame rules.
Thanks in anticipation, Arthur Harman

Thanks in anticipation, Arthur Harman Hi Arthur Each side had 6 Infantry, a gun and a general The Prussians had 3 cavalry, the British 2 cavalry. Two British units start in the fort, up to 4 units can start on the British baseline to the left of the fort. The remainder start anywhere to the left of the river. The Prussians start to the left of the river on their side all the way down to the fort - again on the baseline. Cavalry Move 3, Infantry move 2 and fire 3, gun moves 2 and fires 6, train moves 3. One move to embark into the train and one move to disembark. You cannot fire at or from the train carriages. The woods and buildings provide cover and block line of site. Hill block line of sight Fields don't block line of sight but do provide cover. We used the sudden death rules and rated everyone as avaerage to make the ame easier. At the end of 10 turns the winner is the side holding the fort. Hope that helps - let me know if you need to know anything else.

Thank you very much for your kind reply, Mike!
I presume the Prussians have to capture the fort either by killing off all the garrison and entering unopposed, or by fighting their way in through the gate and defeating the garrison in Close Combat? Surely Captain Snort and his brave boys will never surrender, even if the dastardly Prussians succeed in driving off the British relief force and surround Pippin Fort before Turn 10?
Apart from the rules for embarking/disembarking and moving on the train, is there any restriction on when the train can steam up to the fort?
Best wishes, Arthur

Best wishes, Arthur Yes, the Prussians have to force out the garrison by assaulting it. We allowed them to fight over the walls. if they managed to get into the fort they have to stop in the first square (as with all cover). The winner is the side occupying the fort without opposition. In one game we did have a draw with both sides in the fort on the very last turn. No other restrictions on the train. it won't start moving until turn 2 as it will take the first turn for any troops to embark on it.

Thank you very much for clearing up those points, Mike!
This may seem like a dreadful heresy, but my plan is to recreate the Pippin Fort game using c3cm squares, so the whole game will be roughly 2ft by 1ft, so very easy to carry and set up. For terrain tiles I'm going to use coasters obtained from a charity shop: each coaster will have nine squares. Pippin Fort, the fields, buildings and trees will be cardboard. Hills will be pieces of green underlay left over from recarpeting the bedrooms.
The figures will be 10mm Pendraken, but using Dutch Napoleonic troops, painted as imaginary Red and Blue armies in toy soldier style, on small individual MDF bases. I plan to scratchbuild a steam locomotive that resembles those of the 1840s to suit the troops' uniforms.
Best wishes, Arthur

I stopped by the table in the afternoon, but I think you guys were exhausted by then! Would love to see it again at the March London Toy Soldier Show. I live just 5 minutes from the venue so will definitely be there. Are there usually any other games there? Are there usually any plastics traders too?

There is normally one game run by someone - it is mostly a trading show - there will be peole selling plastics there - will be great to see you.
