I have finally finished the last of the initial 5 British Units for a Rebels and Patriots force. These are 40mm Front Rank AWI painted Toy Soldier Style. The finished 5 units - still need flags and some more movement trays. They sat on the painting table for a year before being finished off - hopefully the American forces won't take as long....

These look great, what rules will you use btw? Starting with Rebels and Patriots from Osprey Then Black Powder for bigger games Eventually plan to build up to The Wargame for the biggest games (hence the Toy Soldier, gloss look). So 12 man units, 24 man units and then 48 man units.

The next unit off the painting table is the first of the American Continentals.

They paint up nicely in 'toy soldier' style. Though as per a conversation I had recently, back in the early 70s this was the best most of us could do! I think Matt varnish was still in the future and outside of those who paint Historex and the like with oils, no one shaded figures. I think the late, great, Bill Brewer was he first to do so around 1975. Although I've used shading since Bill taught me how to do it around 1976/7, I do enjoy painting my 42mm Little Britains in one colour/gloss varnish - quick and easy and there's still something magical about the glossy toy soldier look. I'm very tempted to do some of Spencer-Smith's Shiny Toy Soldier range as early 19th century in chocolate box fancy uniorms.

I'm with you there Brian. There's just something about glossy colourful figures on shiny green bases...
Cheers Anthony

A couple of quick photos of the latest figures which have finally made it out of the "paint Bureau of Shame"... 2 units of American Militia. Up next are 3 units of Continentals and I will finally be able to play a game...

Great looking figures, the officer reminds me of the one in Airfix Washingtons Army

These look great, the units capture the feel of undrilled rebels/freedom fighters.

12 more AWI Continental infantry finished. These have been sitting on the painting table nearly done since the start of the New Year. 24 more to finish off in white facings which will hopefully get done soon.
