Huge thanks to Mike for organizing this,
played my first Age of Penda and first Men who would be Kings, great games put on by Anthony and Mike. I'm afraid I took no photographs, but others did.

It was a very enjoyable day (again) even if it went far too quickly and I was completely shattered by the end of it and for the whole next day! I think I'm not used to standing on my feet all day and socialising for that long any more!
We had 11 players (with Brian Carrick and Alistair playing Tag over lunchtime and each attending for 1/2 a day).
There were 5 games and I'll document them in their own post with photos below.

I ran a North West Frontier game with an attack on a disabled armoured train and a British relief force. I used my AIP NWF forces with the Armoured train I made for Imperial Miniatures (which is still available from them). The rules were The Men Who Would Be Kings from Osprey with two forces of 24/18 points per side. Davel wondering what he has got himself into as he takes on Brian Carrick. The artillery wagon. The British hiding in their infantry wagon We played two games and in both the Afghans scraped a narrow victory with heavy losses to deprive the British of the train and the supplies it carried.

Patrick and Willian ran a Lion Rampant game using their splendid collection of Normans (from Irrgular Miniatures, I believe) and a wonderful town wall and gate.

As per my comments on the other thread, thanks for orgaanising Mike, a very enjoyable day with good games, good company and good grub. I've been having problems with 'the black dog' and this was a real boost. I wish there had been time to play more of the games but I enjoyed Mark's snowball fight which proved to be a very tactical game and thanks to Alan and Mark for trying my smugglers game. It really needs four people which is quite a lot for such a small group so I'll go for a two sided game next year.

Brian,
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I had hoped that the goup would expand over the years but although we have some more people it hasn't managed to top 12 in any year.
I think that, perhaps, bringing games that can be played in 1 hour to 1.5 hours would be better and there would be more opportunity to swap around more. My own NWF game took far longer than I was expecting at about 2.5 hours per game.
I am thinking of working on my 54mm Magnificent Seven game for a future games day.

To my surprise we managed to get three Age of Penda games in on the day, two before lunchtime. This meant that I had the pleasure of gaming with Paul and Patrick in the morning and Dave and Alastair in the afternoon (I umpired the afternoon game). I think rules like Age of Penda are perfect for our one day format. Other suitable rules would be the Portable Wargame or a Fistful of Lead (using the standard five-strong squad per player).
Cheers Anthony

I think both the games I played - with Mark and Alan - took longer than expected because we chatted quite a lot, particularly about possible rules and options for Mark's Snowball fight game; I was fine with this, they were both very enjoyable sessions. SPeed isn't helped, I suspect, by explaining the games and the rules so hour and a half would seem tight allowing for re-set. Though when I helped run a Stingray participation game at Salute it conceentrated the players minds wondefully by having a visible timer - the players had to achieve their objectives before the clock ran out. Given the numbers attending, 3 or 4 players and an umpire was too optimistic and thus a 2 player game would likely be better. Certainly a simple scenario such as a gunfight would work well. I have my 54mm gunfighters from th 70s but two games on the same topic would best be avoided. I could certainly bring some of my 42mm shiny little britains to play with Portable Wargame rules (which I currently use with 15mm). It's no good - I need some more big toy soldiers

I came away inspired to try and work on something in a larger scale (haven't done this since my 54mm NWF figures a few years ago). I usually get put off painting by the thought of endlessly painting up figures for an army so working on something with a much more manageable dozen or so figures feels much more do-able.
