I have been waiting for a cheap way in to Boxer Rebellion in 54mm, and this was it! Thanks for posting.
Question: in building my Boxer forces, where do I go for Chinese Imperial forces/regulars?
Many thanks!

Unfortunately at the moment there are no reasonably priced plastic imperial army figures on the market. In plastic there was a small set of assorted figures made by a chinese firm called OWN. They are quite hard to find and getting significantly more expensive over time. In metal there are quite a few more options such as the old dorset range, regal, traditon, etc but prices start at 5 pounds per figure for unpainted castings with painted examples increasing dramatically from there.

Thanks for the tip about the OWN brand. Got a couple sets, but they’re mostly Boxers. Looks like I’ll need to do some conversions …

For my Chinese regulars I converted AIP Dervishes with rifles. I used the ones with caps rather than turbans, and gave them pigtails made out of string - they look great.
For Chinese regular cavalry, I used Airfix WW2 Germans, the figures standing firing and throwing grenade. Cut off the WW2 equipment, replace tin helmet with mandarin hat made of Green stuff, they fit naturally on any spare horses you have and they are done!

And the AIP set contains some ICA...
I also used AIP Egyptian infantry and cavalry as the basis for conversions.

Thanks, Mike. I’ve ordered some Egyptian inf for that purpose, and will isolate the ICA from the Boxer sets coming today. You and others have already given some tips about cavalry. I now need to think about finding/converting/making suitable artillery crews … BTW, I have ordered your three volumes on the conflict, in addition to the rules by you and Chris Swan. Can’t wait to dive into them!

Thanks for that - Hope you enjoy them!
Look for buttons (no really) for 'coolie' hats in various shapes and sizes - search for patterned and domed buttons on eg Etsy or eBay.
AIP Boxer/WWI Japanese can be used for westernised infantry too. EXpeditionary Force have some Colonial Cavalry sets suitable for westernised cavalry - also some have the ornate frogging on their coat fronts for Japanese cavalry.
Artillery - AIP Colonial; Chinese 'Lego' makers do various suitable WWI pieces which are close enough or can be modified to be. Aliexpress has various makers.

As Mike mentioned, the AIP Boxer set contains several figures that can be painted in the traditional Imperial uniforms. I made my westernized Imperials out of AIP Egyptian infantry with the turban heads from the Boxers. Sorry I don't have a better image of the blue unit with a white circle with Chinese characters in black on their chests. It takes time to paint, but it adds a lot.

Thanks for the pictures, Nick. Great looking game, and inspiring! I have some Egyptians on order for precisely that purpose. These are all great ideas. As one of my group just messaged me, ‘buying the figures is the easy part’!

Here are my chinese irregular cavalry - thanks to Nick and Mike for their advice on these - I could not get the recommended figures so these are converted from HAT Gauls and WW2 German Airfix figs from my spares box. These are Chinese regular cavalry made from Airfix WW2 Germans Now here is my take on Chinese regulars converted from AIP Dervishes, note the pigtails!

And as a bonus here are some AIP mandarins with free flags from the net. A couple are not really flags, they are contemporary Chinese propaganda cartoons depicting "death to the Westerners" but I thought they added some period flavour.
