Well done! In a few months time I hope to have a Russian army (Crimean War) to oppose my Brits. I will be happy to oppose your Brits too!
Best wishes Anthony

Antony - "We fought the bear before and if old William Britains true, the Russians shall not have Constantinople" - with apologies to McDermott but you get the general drift - thanks for that happily give your Ruskies a go or a British Army manoeuvres somewhere around Long Valley maybe. I could have just gone and took an Army from the cabinet but to be honest wanted to try out how easily (and cheaply) putting a starter set together would be - makes a break from painting around 100 or so Hinton Hunt, Douglas and Minifigs old school to bulk out my own Russian Crimean Army for some retro gaming - I did look at Schneider home casts as well as that kind of appealed but they ain't that easy to find in the sort of quantities needed over here - atb Tim

A fine job. They look great. I must admit, having played this game against Mike at the 54mm Convention (Mike beat me easily) I'm very tempted to invest in some figures son I can play the game again. Your figures have come out really well.
Best Wishes Dave

Those look like a great purchase. A Russian Head for my Little Wars Revisited range to go with the Greatcoat body I've just had made is on my list to add a Russian Army to my collection..
More than happy to meet up at some point and pit my German Army against your forces...

Let me buy the book first Mike! Am working on a bit of suitable scenery too - to follow when I have had a bit more time to get things in order - what size gridded squares do you use - not sure whether to make a grid cloth or buy one in - atb Tim

I am using 100mm squares (4") as it lets you fit a game in 3' x 4' or play a large game in 6' x 4'.
Anthony has gone for 5" squares.

Tim,
I use 5" squares due to the footprint of my 54mm Little Legion Zulus (I have six figures to a unit). I also want to be able to play the WW1/2 PWG rules which means having squares big enough to fit 1/43 or 1/50 scale tanks and vehicles. For 'normal' sized pre-20th C 54mm figures in marching pose I think 4" squares would be fine.
Best wishes Anthony

What kind of goop do you use to fix the figures to their bases? What material do you use for your bases? I have some very thin birch ply available and could cut squares. Is that too heavy?

Hi jimmn, I use Copydex to glue my figures to magnetic mdf bases that I purchase from Sally 4th.

I use 2mm MDF for my bases and use PVA glue (white wood glue) to glue the figures to bases.

Today i bought The One-Hour Wargame and greatly enjoyed studying the rules for the ACW. Once i wrapped my head around the idea that a unit is a mystical entity that can take fifteen hits, it became clear that you only need six figures per side. That’s if you choose to use one figure per unit. Mine are being set up as three figures per infantry unit and artillery battery but one horse per cavalry unit. Anyway, the epiphany is that not many figures are required to play a one hour wargame using the original rules.
On a side note, i hope people will search for the Battle of Dranesville in Wikipedia. This was a nice little engagement with a map that would make a nice scenario for a one hour wargame. The two forces blundered into each other. A reasonable objective would be to extricate without taking a lot of casualties. JEB Stuart lost over 200 men. The Union forces lost less than 100. But Stuart’s South Carolina unit fired on the rebel Kentucky boys, who eagerly fired back, so how do we know the Yankees did any damage at all?

I use 2mm MDF for my bases and use PVA glue (white wood glue) to glue the figures to bases. Mike After testing three kinds of glue, it seems they all work. The problem is the cavalry. I tried spackle. It should be dry tomorrow. My bases are thin Baltic Birch ply that was laying around. When it is used up, MDF will be next.

One Hour wargames are an excellent set of rules. Somehow Neil Thomas has managed to capture the flavour of each period covered with only a few tweaks to the game engine. When using 54mm armies we've used 12 figure infantry units and six figure cavalry units, meaning we have had to expand the playing area. Your method would make it possible to retain the original playing area and as you say use fewer 54mm figures-very helpful when starting a new period! It would be great to see some photos once you've got your ACW games up and running.
