Earlier this week we played a game using the rather excellent Fistful of Lead: Horse & Musket rules. These are taken from the Wild West rules and cover periods from the French & Indian Wars through to the ACW so it was fairly easy to tweak them to suit the NWF. They work really well for multi-player skirmish games and while they'd suit any scale figures, they fitted nicely with 54mm.
