How late can one go using the British red uniform as used during the Anglo-Zulu war? My understanding it that it was phased out in 1880. For that matter, how early can one field British troops in khaki?
I've got a box of AiP colonial Brits and I'm undecided on how to paint them. While I've got a corresponding box of Zulus, I'm afraid that if I paint the Brits red it's limiting their historical field of action.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with using Red Coated British in the Zulu Wars and in early sudan. Yes, the slade-wallace belts changed in 1882, but I think that is a minor thing in a game of Toy Soldiers...

If you are willing to overlook minor details (like shape of helmet and equipment) then basically:
Red coats and sun helmets can serve from the late Mutiny to the Sudan (and NW Canada) (say 1857-1885) Khaki and sun helmet can serve from Indian Mutiny to WW1 (say 1857 to 1930)
Khaki wasn't used much if at all in the main Zulu war but was used in skirmishes against later small rebellions and against other later tribes. Both colours were used in different was against each of the other "big 4" enemies: Soudanese, Afghans, Boers, Chinese.
The combination of red coat and puttees was rare but did occur usually puttees go with khaki and baggy trousers and gaiters with red coats but there are exceptions on both sides of that.
If it were me, if I have a particular favourite campaign I would take the most correct option for that one for painting then use them anywhere as required, if I didn't have a favourite and wanted the widest option I would paint them as modelled (puttees-khaki, gaitors red) then use them anywhere.

For me, I like the look of the red coats and dark blue trousers. I game Egyptian and early Sudan and my troops are painted this way.

hmm... the distiction of putees=khaki and gaiters=red makes sense to me. I can forgive a little temporal suspension of disbelief easier than being consistently wrong in accoutrement.
I think the figures have puttees but I'm off to the garage to check.

Now you've done it. Just got back from the garage with AiP Brits in tow (and found a couple Accurate guys thrown in for good measure). They all have spats so red uniforms it is. I also found that I've got a Gatling gun and two boxes of Boer Commandos out there in storage. I'll just have to brush aside those 10mm ACW figs I've been working on and paint some of the big boys!
