I found some AIP boxes of WW1 late war Germans and Boers in the shed. My thoughts turned to the German Revolution. My Germans would work well as Freikorps and the Boers have possibilities as armed civilian revolutionaries. Any suggestions for other figures to use and most importantly rules? Thanks Alan

I always thought that the AIP Russians from 1904 were quite useful generic troops for that kind of time period...

I thought about doing this several years ago. I bought some Peagasus Russian Naval Infantry and painted them up as German sailors.
Irregular has some useful figures in both their WWI and SCW ranges.

For rules you could do something simple like Bolt Action, or even FUBAR. Osprey has an interwar set of rules too, World Aflame.

Airfix and matchbox or copies with helmets replaced with hats from putty or transplants from cowboys, probably with hat rims trimmed and suspenders moulded on or painted on to make a certain style of Bavarians in shorts.

Found this excellent card model, free download, 1/35th scale German Armoured car 'LOTTE' in the correct colour scheme for this period. It should fit in very nicely scale wise with AIP figures. www.landships.info/landships/models.html# Audrey Romanchuck listings on left for armoured car types - HOTCHKIS - IZHORTSKY
If you have surf through this website you might find some other vehicles that would work for this revolution plus all the others that seem to have come up around then.
If anyone manages to build the kit I'd be interested to see one with the AIP figures standing next to it and to know how difficult/easy a project it was.

Are you going to use the AIP Germans in Stahlhelm as they come out of the box or convert some into specialists like a flame thrower unit ? What about the backpacks, I've looked at loads of BUNDESARCHIV pics recently and they mainly show troops with minimal equipment, taking off the packs is a chore though and I suppose leaving them on means you still get the use of the figures as WW1, what's your thinking ?
Also thinking about what other figures would be useful for this conflict. I'm checking on the size/fit but AIP WW1 Russians would be worth picking up, as mentioned by Mike, as half have peakless caps which could pass for Sailor ones. Some of the AIP Spanish American War Spanish poses with head swaps might be a good starting point for some sailors, since their jackets are the correct length and they have straight leg trousers. Some details would need work depending on what 'look' you want.
AIP Napoleonic Prussian Militia might also be a goer as they are all wearing the peaked cap which seems to have been popular with Militia/worker types for 1919, most have straight leg trousers and if the jackets where extended in length could pass for guys wearing coats. Of course some work would be needed on removing the Napoleonic equipment but they don't have much moulded on to start with.
What about other types of vehicles ? I see that trucks were quite popular for ferrying troops around the city would you add this element to a game or just use them as static cover ?

By way of rules, I'm going to use Grant's Battle: Practical Wargaming. The gaps in his rules (e.g. Light Machine Guns, Cavalry) have been covered by others, and the rules are simple enough to be learned with very little delay.

I do like these rules and still use them with my 20mm Airfix figures and tanks. Who has filled in the gaps you mentioned, l would be most interested to see?
