I'm steadily building up my 54mm ECW armies and I'm having them painted for me, as I haven't the time to do them myself with all my other projects. There's the Parliamentary army with cavalry (by placing the figure bases a different way, I can represent Swedish or Dutch cavalry). I'm having another 4 foot units painted at the moment, so that will be 6 a side. All ACTA figures. Cavalry is limited and none have floppy hats, so might have to have both sides in lobster helmet. Best Wishes Dave

They look great. Are you intending using To the Strongest’s ecw equivalent with them?

Hi Dave, wonderful figures! Don't worry about the lack of floppy hats-the cavalry on both sides would have worn helmets and looked identical apart from the colour of their sashes. Cheers, Anthony.

Thanks for the info Anthony.
Alan, I may well use the TtS ECW rules called For King and Parliament. I played them at Partizan show last week, and Simon wants to use my 54mm figures for a demo around the August Partizan date.
I also have Dirk Donvil's rules called About Cromwell, and at the games day in Woking in 2018, Anthony and I had a great game using the Pikemen's Lament rules.
I've based my figures based on Dirk's rules
Best Wishes Dave

That’s great to hear re Simon and the game. They certainly will be an attractive display for show goers to see. Dave and Anthony do you think “About Cromwell” would would serve well for me gaming with my Alexander’s toy soldiers James ll figures?

Hi Alan.
I've used About Cromwell to help me with organising and basing my figures, but haven't played a game with them yet. Dirk Donvil has posted a video showing a brief playtest of an ECW GAME on You Tube (think it's under PCDM Mobilitate or something like that, but if you type in 54mm wargaming you should come across it).
I have used Dirk's About Bonaparte (his Napoleonic and Ancient rules use the same basic mechanism) and they were quite enjoyable.
I can't speak for Anthony, but I'm, guessing he'd recommend Pikemen's lament - we both enjoyed playing those rules.
Then There's TtS For King and Parliament.
If you wanted to look at About Cromwell, I could always post it to you so you could look at it before you buy. You can always message me and give me your details if you'd like to borrow them.
Best Wishes Dave

Hi Alan,
Any ECW rules should work for your late 17th century collection as regiments were still organised into pike and shot at roughly a ratio of 2 musket per 1 pike. I have played two games of About Cromwell, one with Mike, which I enjoyed but Mike had reservations with, and one with Alastair who enjoyed the rules a lot. I think my only criticism of the rules would be that they could be laid out better and more user friendly. Having said that, they are nevertheless a good re-formatting of the Command and Colours system for none gridded conventional wargaming. One big point in their favour is that pike and shot regiments act as whole units-i.e. no 'sleeves' of shot being allowed to wander off from their parent unit once the battle has started!
The Pikeman's Lament, like all the 'Lion Rampant' family of rules are great fun and as Dave mentioned we had a great game at last year's Woking Games Day. However, the rules do not allow for mixed pike and shot units and so are very definitely for low level 'skirmish' games only in my opinion. I think if you want to fight dare I say it 'proper battles' with one or more brigades a side plus cavalry etc then out of the two rules under discussion I would use About Cromwell. If on the other hand you want games like the one you described on your blog-i.e. very low level almost RPG-like skirmish scenarios (rather like those in the rulebook) then you can't do better than Pikeman's Lament.
Best wishes Anthony
