I've never seen those Britains Highlanders in sun helmets here in the U.S. I wish I could find some to swap heads with some Britains Mounties I bought to convert to Boer War era British lancers. The Mounties are otherwise perfect, just need a khaki paint job over their scarlet tunics. Dorset Soldiers does various heads that should be compatible with Britains (a lot of his stuff is recast Britains): www.dorsetsoldiers.com/

I'm breaking the rules a bit here, talking about our 42mm collections. I plead that, as deliberately 'shiny pink-cheeked toys' they are simply a smaller relation to 54mms rather than standard wargames figures.
My friend Dan Foley ('Fusilier Dan') started by ordering a lot of Spencer Smith's 'Little Britons' (which are essentially inspired copies of classic Britains 'B' range of pre-war years, sculpted by Aly Morison). He paints up units from countries he has visited, so he has greek evzones, the Hawaiian royal guard, Mounties, Argentine military cadets, and more. Therefore his themse isn't an army, as such, as a mad alliance of nations.
I resisted joining him for some while, painting up some buildings and starting writing some rules, as is my habit - I've written 20+ sets of rules over the years, from four pagers to 100 page books. That really did it. My own project is an imaginary invasion of England in the late Victorian era, by the dastardly french over Epsom week, when nobody was looking out for them. So its highlanders and lancers on one side, zouaves and cuirassiers on the other, in units of 12 foot or 6 horse.
I have more french line and RHA on the table at present, the last a cunning conversion of earlier period dismounted cavalry with hussar heads and artillery arms. Armed suffragettes and gallant gamekeepers may well be next.

Lots of cool stuff you guys are doing. You just need to move to Virginia so we can game together. Where in VA? We just moved to Old Town Alexandria.

Howard,
I was about to get into 42mm when Mike got me into 54mm instead. However there are still some periods that are difficult to do in 54mm such as late 17th century (I'm thinking Sedgemoor, Tangiers etc). Irregular Miniatures do a very nice range late 17th century figures in 42mm and I may still go in that direction next year if I can't find suitable 54mm that don't need converting.
Cheers Anthony

Nick. My foot artillery were intended to go with my Ft Henry Guard but they were cobbled together from parts sold by Soldierpac. One could do the same with parts from London Bridge or Dorset.

Cheers Anthony That sounds fantastic. I'm about to order from Ian at Irregular this week. He has a range of figures based on the German Heyde ranges (which existed in various scales from about 42 to, IIRC, about 70mm) which I want to see how they go with the less stylised figures I already own.

In spite of telling myself I had enough projects on the go (about 8 or so), when I saw the 54/60mm Expeditionary force figures I just couldn't resist buying some. They're the Macedonian/Persian range-even though I already have them in 12mm!!! And they hve plans for Napoleonics and I've heard via Toy Soldier Collector they may even do Romans!!!! Will my wallet never close?!!!
Strange isn't it how we can't resist these things. But s my mate says, "Never finish painting your last wargames figure. Make sure you always have a few still to paint, or you'll die"!!!!!

Just got Britain's camel bugler figure to day. Very nice. Every time I get a new figure or look at the ones I already have, I wonder why do I collect other figures and scales.

Splendid looking figures Mike and others. I am trying not to be tempted to start something new... Alan
