I just played my first game of the basic rules of Lawford and Young's classic "Charge!" rules, and really enjoyed them!
I'm looking through the Advanced rules now, and my thought is I'd just cherry-pick some of the elements from them (like light infantry, and "understrength" companies) rather than take them whole hog (as they do seem a bit fiddly with everything added in), but was curious how others play Charge!

I bought this book in 1970 in London when I was singing in Westminster Abbey. I had lots of Airfix and painted a bit but knew nothing about wargaming.
Have read it many times and love the photos, but have never played it.
Any chance of some photos and a synopsis of the rules/battle description to encourage me to try the rules out?

Neither! I always felt they were rather unwieldy. But the book is invaluable as inspiration.

I have it and fully intend to try it out at some point but haven't got around to it or the rules in The Wargame...

I have the rules and have read them but like Tim I fear they may be a bit clunky so I have never played them.

I bought the book in 1968 on Shaftesbury Avenue in London. I cut my wargaming teeth on the rules using 30mm German flats. I haven't tried it since I made the switch to 54mm Napoleonics, mainly due to the large number of figures required, 60+ for a three company regiment. I may try it with half sized companies. To answer your original question, I played the advanced rules and then bolted on some more detailed artillery concepts from Donald Featherstone's "Advanced War Games".

Yeah I'll post a battle report in here shortly! Just did a solo play of the Blasthoff Bridge scenario in the book using the basic rules and really liked how they played. The bits I thought would be too fiddly really worked, and it encouraged what felt like realistic tactics.

Well if we ever see the Hat release of their 54mm SYW Austrians, at least there will be availability of the right sort of period figures to use with the rules! Never played the rules but it was a book that I constantly kept getting out of our local library back in the mid 70's and spent many a happy hour pouring over the pictures, great memories

Me and our kid nicked a copy from the local library back in 1970, in them days we were right light fingered little bastards! After trying the rules they made our melons ache even worse than Maths and Science home work put together... they were that long winded we actually snuck the book back into the library!
