Last year at this time we played a Rorke's Drift game using The Men Who Would Be Kings. This year we tried The Sword and the Flame. The rules provided an exciting, but lengthy game, in fact we only got through one and a half of the three scenario "Waves" in five hours. When we stopped the game, the hospital was on fire, and the Zulus had just broken into the storehouse and were on the roof and the British were hard pressed on both the north and south walls. It would take a miracle for them to survive to the end of the second wave and then survive a third wave with even more (15) fresh Zulu units. Below are some photos. The first is of me in my new mustache.

Thanks for your kind words. The Zulu figures are mostly AIP, which I prefer because their shields are moulded on. There are a sprinkling of Conte and A Call to Arms as well. The British are mostly A Call to Arms , with some W. Britains for the heroes. I ran the game and played the Zulus, hopefully not a conflict of interest. I am still figuring out how to dress appropriately to represent the Zulus without offending anyone. Perhaps a Zulu headdress? I am positive no one wants to see me in a loincloth!

Very inspiring pictures which gives a good feel of the wargame. Many thanks for sharing your game which shows what can be done in 54mm. Looking at the pictures a certain piece of music went through my head. Great stuff.

Over the years we have had between 500 to 10,000 Zulus with us at iSandlwana - also when they have been to the ULK at Cardiff and Brecon - below a couple of pics again from the 140th

Great looking game. I find that anything other than a small game really drags on when using TSATF.

Yes, I'm afraid I find the same.

I'm still searching for fast play alternatives to TSATF for Rorke's Drift. Trouble is, I need man for man rules for the fighting inside the hospital. Last year was used TMWWBK, but everyone I know has been turned off by the severe pinning penalties with those rules. Once you get pinned, especially if your unit has a high rally number, you're basically out of the game.

Nick, if you use half-strength units for TMWWBK (as suggested in the rules themselves) pinning becomes much rarer and therefore less of a problem. A unit is more likely to be destroyed than pinned, which gives a more cinematic feel but is still more elegant and faster than TSATF. Cheers, Anthony.
