Hi Folks Finally joined the group after many months of “lurking”! Been collecting toy/model soldiers for more than 50 years going back to the late 1960s collecting Timpo figures etc and remember spending my pocket money on boxes of Airfix 1/72 figures at the local model shop (remember those?) - I was so excited when they brought out their Napoleonic range particularly the British Highland infantry including the infamous “mole-bayoneting” pose! Collected metal wargame armies in many periods in 25/28mm and regularly game with my pal - really enjoyed using the Lion Rampant/Pikeman’s Lament skirmish rules recently published by Osprey which are perfect for 54mm due to the small numbers of figures required. For about the last 10 years I have been spending more time collecting, painting and converting 1/32 figures in various periods- mainly Napoleonic, ECW, Ancient, Medieval etc. - mainly plastic but also some metal figures., inspired by the work of Eric Kemp, Mike Blake et. al. Recently retired after 35 years teaching in a Further Education College (still sane - only just!) so I’ve now got more time to paint and collect even more figures! Have found the Little Wars board to be a great source of information and inspiration so hopefully will chip in with posts where appropriate. Regards Bill

Hi Bill,
Great to hear from you! My first game of Lion Rampant was with Britains Deetail Medieval figures (I used the Arthurian fantasy lists:D ) so I'm with you there on the suitability of Dan's Rampant series of rules for 54mm gaming. You will have seen from some of the posts here that some of us find grid-based rules such as the Portable Wargame, Table Top Battles and the Command and Colours games also highly suitable for 54mm as the grid areas can be any size you want to accommodate your scale of figure. Hope to meet you at Woking Games Day if that's feasible for you?
Best wishes Anthony

Hi Anthony The pictures from the Woking shows for the last couple of years look great and it looks like a really interesting event. Unfortunately, I’m based up in the frozen lands of the North East (just outside Sunderland) so it’s a bit of a hike for me! Fingers crossed that the current situation regarding COVID doesn’t affect these events - been great to be able to attend toy fairs in Gateshead and also a wargames show in Stockton over the last few weeks after so many cancellations of events over the last 18 months. There are usually 3 wargames shows each year in the North East - Durham (quite small), Gateshead and Stockton - noticed more and more attendees are (mostly) chaps of a certain age; often makes me feel quite young!😎 Bill

P.s. not that there’s anything wrong with chaps of a certain age! 😂 Just sometimes wonder where the new, young recruits are going to come from🤔

Well that's a good point Bill. Perhaps like me the new recruits will 'cross over' to toy soldier gaming not in their youth but in their 'prime'! Here's hoping that one day a 54mm games day can be organised in the Midlands or somewhere for those that can't make it south. Best wishes Anthony

Maybe it’s something to do with age-related failing eyesight making 54mm figures a bit easier to paint than their smaller colleagues!😎

Hi everybody,
My name is Alberto, I'm from Madrid and I've been visiting the forum for a while searching for inspiration and some answers on different matters about our wonderful hobby, tabletop wargaming and big scale miniatures in particular. My collection - I should say my stash - goes through different scales and periods. I started hoarding some 1/35 cheap kits (when Tamiya infantry boxes were really cheap)for some undefined WW2 project. When I really dived into, was preparing a Franco-Prussian skirmish table converting some AIP minis. Since then, despite the lack of space and time I keep coming back to the the 1/32 or 1/35 in one way or another with too many projects, too many times fueled by bargains or some compulsive idea, there's some psychological issues in this surely...
I would like to share with others my progresses and seek for advice from the "little Wars"community.
Regards
Alberto

I love Madrid whenever I visit (especially some good churros y chocolate...). I know Paul Liddle (not sure he's a member here) has got some great blog posts on 54mm Franco-Prussian war battles: paulsotherwargames.blogspot.com/search/label/54mm

Cloudcaptain here. Long time TMP member and lurker on Quantril's blog. It always amazed me how he could convert just about anything into his armies. Then the Penny Whistle blog showed off gaming using the Treehouse Kids 60mmish Aliens. Coupled with the old Major General's site and the Fantasy Toy Soldiers blog....I was inspired to collect 54mm armies over the last decade. Sadly, they would see no use. I kept slowly building up though as we wargamers are often want to do. Fast forward and I found this forum. I was lucky enough to find someone in my city (JohnY) who also games in this scale. Now all those forces are getting sorted and finally hitting the painting table! I am keen on: Colonials and VSF AWI/F&IW Scifi (Both hard scifi and pulp scifi) Imagi-nations moderns The Age of Piracy WW1 and Interwar Horse and Musket period I like a bit of novelty or weirdness in my games. Pushing blocks of musket armed troops in straight lines across a flat green plain has been done to death. Add some dinosaurs and now we are talking! The jungles of Venus, the mad Sultan's steam death-machine, rayguns at dawn...that's more my speed. I draw inspiration from the Mythos Writers, Howard, Burroughs, weird artists (Dean, Bosch, Beksiński) and such. I grew up on Thundarr, He-man, The Thundercats, Heavy Metal Magazine, early anime, and a dash of Clive Barker (way too early in my development). If you ever ask yourself "what is wrong with this guy?" well know you know.
