I know quite a few people who game with smaller scale buildings than the figures themselves. What scales do you all use for buildings and terrain?

I use 28mm buildings for 40mm and 54mm figures. To begin with I did this for reasons of space, but I have come to realise that even if I had the space, 'true scale' buildings have too large a footprint for anything above a 1 figure=1 man skirmish. If I wargamed with 15mm figures I would use 10mm buildings; if using 28mm figures I would use 15mm buildings.

I do something very similar to Anthony ( who has put this more eloquently than I could) and find it works very well indeed.

One guy in the group was determined to make buildings and trees to true 1/32 scale...there was only room on the table for one of each! Looking at an old Britians tree, which look plenty big enough, and comparing to a real one quickly shows that they are compromises in terms of height and spread. Ditto with buildings. I prefer to have a village of houses rather than just one, and mix in various scales. Some small buildings like sheds, lean-tos and outhouses are 'scaleless' anyway.
We have experimented with 'flat-pack fold up' and it solves the storage problem ok. Even polystyrene walls pinned together with cocktail sticks (used ones of course!) when taking games to shows. Not as lovely as the permanent stuff but far more paractical and making for just as enjoyable a game.

For my 42mm I've used some of the Hovels buildings intended for 28mm as they are quite large. Certainly buildings need to be under-scale to avoid filling the table - which is fine if you're planning an indoor skirmish but a problem otherwise.

I have a number of 54mm buildings that I use for skirmish games. If you want to play "army" level games, drop down in scale, or state that a single 54mm building represents a built-up area of multiple buildings, so door and windows don't really mean anything.

Thanks for the tips. I might try some 28mm buildings with my 54mm then as I’m planning to go with a 4” grid for army scale games.

I use mostly 28mm and HO scale buildings with 54mm toys. I’ve always found same-scale buildings way too big. To add to this heresy I also use vehicles in anything from 1/32 to 1/56 scales and 1/72 aircraft!

I like my buildings and terrain to be in the same scale as my figures which is 1/35 however I found a scale rule that has 1:33.333 which is the average of 1/32 and 1/35. I therefore make my buildings and terrain to match this scale even though it means that there are fewer building on the table for skirmish games.

I don't think trees are ever really to scale on wargames tables its about creating a look - its all about perspective a full grown oak or beech tree is around 40m tall - in 1:32 that would be over 1m on the table. Not to mention its diameter of around 50cm. The toy soldiers would look tiny. In real life we look up at trees, on the wargames table we look down.

Yes, Richard you are correct it is all about perspective and trees can be any height but I think the buildings should match the figures.

Has anyone had any success finding wooden blocks of the right size to serve as buildings once painted?
