Hi,
those of you who have seen the Relief of Fort Pippin game may well have admired the scenery. Mike, who made the scenery, doesn't want to sit in front of a laser cut for days on end producing it for people - how odd
Mike, being a nice guy, has no objections to my shameless copying his ideas for trees and hedges. I'm not arranged them for his squares; instead I've made bases which will enable them to be used in any arrangement. You can see the design here: Toy Soldier scenery.pdf (401.93 KB)
I contacted Warbases (as I've used them before and found them very helpful anbd reasonably priced) and they quoted me (add VAT to all)
Tree silhouette 75p (note that I explained I didn't need the bottom edge of the foliage engraved; it's just there foro clarity
Tree base 18p
Hedge 50p
Hedge with gate 75p (the gate is 'engraved' ie there's no slots
Hedge base 23p
I'm advised that if you wish to order any of these items from Warbases (I have no connection with them except as a satisfied customer) then please quote Brian Cameron and their quote to me dated 29.3.22
If you have a different supplier you prefer or your own laser cutter than you welcome to use the sketch for your personal use (only).
I'll let you know how they work out when they arrive and I assemble them.
Brian

Awesome Brian! I was just searching around for 2.5D terrain suppliers, and then saw this. Very interested to see how they look. Just purchased a giant pack of 4” wood squares for my grid and these would work a treat.

I’ve ordered from Warbases too. Thanks to Mike, Brian and Warbases for facilitating this.

Does anyone have the design skills for other 2.5D terrain? I’d be interested in castle walls, medieval villages etc.

I've received the trees and hedges back from Warbases. The photo shows one of each type assembled and quickly painted. Apologies for the quality of the photo. I've included a Britains 54mm and a couple of my Spencer-Smith 42mm figures to show the size. I feel the tree is rather too small for 54mm but looks pretty good for 42mm so I'm going to increase the tree height from about 75mm to 100mm and have another batch cut. I don't want them too big otherwise there's a risk of them getting knocked over while moving figures. The trees seem pretty stable but Tragadmastre Alan has some concerns about stabilty and suggested a square base so I've drawn one up and will get a few cut as well.

Looking great Brian! Worked on mine too. I wonder if the hedges need to be a little higher too? Count me in on getting some of the bigger trees and bases too. Would a pine tree be worth considering and bushes too?

Definitely taller on both of those, I agree. Excited to see the next batch. What paints did you use?

I should probably have asked Mike what size his (trees and hedges) are. Mike - could yopu oblige?
Yes, I was thinking that the hedges should be taller as well. Currently I've redrawn the trees as 100mm high and 100mm wide. Make the hedges 30mm high?
Paints are what I had to hand in larger quantities than Foundry / Vallejo pots. So the brown is Umber from Miniature Paints (sadly their 90ml pots haven't been available for ages, a pity as it's nice paint and excellent value in the big pots. The foliage green is from a tube of Winsor & Newton acrylic sap green. The bases are the same as my table and hills are painted, a dulux emulsion colour from the local Homebase (soon to close, darn it!) I think it's past its best so I shall buy another tin as I want to repsaint the figure bases to match. It's from their 'mix you own' machine so I'm hoping it will be consistent. I should mention that I gave each piece two coats as I find MDF soaks up paint and the old always look a bit faded. That can be useful but not for this purpose.
Glad to see you up and running Alan.

I've had another batch of trees and hedges at a larger size made by Warbases. The first batch looked fine with my 42mm figures were were rather small for 54mm (My thanks to Tragardemastre for the helpful discussion we had). Warbases will be happy to supply if you quote B Cameron and their email dated 18/4/22. The prices are, I think, very reasonable, the tree silhouettes 90, the hedges 65p, bases about 23p. I'm sure they'd be happy to modify for you as well. Usual discalimer - I have no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer.

Some more scenery
On the left a house I made using one of Warbases’ modular buildings – basically a blank shell – and added windows from their 28mm range; the door is scratch built. The building and windows are intended for 28mm but look ok for a suitably under-sized 42mm building. The roof uses a sheet of tile paper from a 'download and print yourself file'.
The half-timbered house comes from the scenery book Peter Dennis produces to go with his little wars book. I reduce this down to 76% but it looks too big for 42mm but is probably ok for 54mm I’ll likely try and again with more reduction or cut off the bottom ‘layer’ to reduce the overall height. I made the building more robust by building it around a foamboard shell.
I’ve also built the bridge from the same book. Again, reduced but looking a bit big. The curve of the road is also a bit steep - figures slide down it! - so I really need to have another go.
Finally, my latest lasercut scenery, some bushes. Just right for an ambush and are mainly intended for my forthcoming Fenian game. The ‘end-on’ view will show you how they’re set up. My own idea this time! Once again, an excellent effort from Warbases. 24 of them came to £9-60 and if you want some Warbases will have the details if you reference Invoice 3788

Brian, Enjoyed seeing your scenery here. The Peter Dennis pieces look great and I especially liked the bridge. The Warbases bushes are very effective and excellent value. They are a great company to work with and buy from. I very much look forward to seeing your game involving the Fenians. Btw did you give the bridge the foam core treatment too?
