Hi. I saw someone on YouTube who's painting 54mm figures for a game using the Neil Thomas' One Hour War game rules. Just wondered if anyone has seen/tried them and can give me an overview of them? I've actually got a copy coming in a weeks time-picked a copybup fairly cheaply from Amazon-but just thoight an overview would help ready for when my copy comes. Thanks.
Best Wishes Dave

Hi,
The guy doing the videos on YouTube is called Stephen Smith. He seems to do a short presentation every month, where he shows you what he's painted that month. Some nice 54mm figures there, but also many other scales. Each post is just a few minutes or so.

The Neil Thomas OHW book has a number of fans. The book gives a description and set of rules for fighting almost every period of history. The rules are simple and so don't really appeal to the 'serious' gamer who likes reams of rules, or even to the 'coffee table' wargamers. But even so, the idea of representing a new period in history with a few symbolic types of soldiers is appealing to a 54mm gamer, given time and costs. I have a WWII set up collected according the OHW rules. In addition, the book includes a 30 scenarios which everyone agrees make it worth having alone. I strongly recommend it.

The book is well worth having. Even if you don't like the rules (some do, some don't but they are easily tweaked anyway) the scenarios alone are worth the price and can be used with other rules and, if necessary, easily tweaked to fit the table, armies and rules that you have and still work. Most are inspired either by other, more complex scenarios or historical battles but have been stripped to their bare essentials and adjusted to provide quick but challenging games that can be played over and over. Here is one of Thomas's scenarios played with 54mm Zulus and British using The Portable Wargame. gameofmonth.blogspot.ca/2017/04/oh-look-more-zulus.html-Ross
