Check out the Playmobil Pirate Ships. I have looked on ebay - are those the large pirate ships and are they about 24" long? Looks like you can get hulls and bits of incomplete sets fairly cheaply.

More like 18" - 20" not counting the bowsprit. I took a look at the UK eBay site and you've got a bigger, and cheaper, selection than we have here in the States.

I use Playmobil ships for my 54mm pirate games. They are cheap, readily available on Ebay, and paint up nicely. The bigger ones are about 20 in long, smaller ones maybe 12 in. The ships have a nice timber texture so I spray matt black, then dry brush with a suitable timber colour then paint in the details. Some pictures here - link
