I thought it would be interesting to see what people are playing in 54mm? Or are intending to play. I have a growing 19th Century collection made up of my own Little Wars Revisited figures which I have used for Funny Little Wars and The Portable Wargame. At the moment it consists of British and Germans I am planning on adding some French troops in the future. I have a joint North West Frontier collection with Anthony Morton, my most regular 54mm opponent,. He has the British (painted by me) and myself the Pathans. We've used The Sworrd and the Flame and The Portable Colonial Wargame. I am slowly building a 54mm Napoleonic collection for use with Neil Thomas rules and have a small number which are enough to play Sharp Practice games with. I also have a vast selection (25 boxes!) of ECW in the loft for a long term project that will happen at some point!

I started out with English Civil War and progressed to Spanish American War. I've collected quite a few American Revolution but painted very few of those. Add a couple dozen gladiators and a smattering of other periods and you've got just about my entire collection.
Every now and then I think about playing a Command & Colors WWI version in 54mm. I know someone who does WWII that way and it's just plain fun.

Very handsome layout!
I've been trying to make deliberately 'toy soldier' terrain, rather than my usual 'realistic' stuff. I think that means a grass base that's really far too green, terraced hills, blue rivers and very neat roads. Also houses that are very toy-like and neat.

Jeff, I've been thinking about C&C WW1 in 54mm too. Currently I am building up my 54mm WW2 for Airfix Battles and Memoir 44. I am also collecting 54mm Zulu Wars from Little Legion for Bob's portable wargame rules and The Sword and the Flame. Like Mike Lewis I also have 54mm ECW from Call to Arms and am in the process of getting it painted.
Cheers Anthony Morton

Too many periods! And growing... My 54mm periods often mirror collections I already own in 15mm or 25mm. At the moment I am debating selling my 25mm collections and keeping the 15mm for large scale battles and the 54's for smaller battles or skirmish games. My collections in chronological order: Pirates with Playmobil ships, AWI, Napoleonic - Peninsula and 100 Days, War of 1812, Texas War of Independence, Indian Mutiny, ACW, French Intervention in Mexico, Zulu War, Northwest Frontier of India, Boer Wars, Sudan, and French in North Africa, circa 1900. Most are painted - not by me! Only Sudan is unpainted. I do not mind mixing factory painted plastic Britains with hand painted figures from other manufacturers and even the occasional expensive metal figure. I feel that mixing figures gives a pleasing early wargaming feel to the game. I tend to field more realistic terrain, but I am close to trying out a grid based game and/or C&C which is very popular around our club and which will employ more stylized terrain.

Oh, I forgot U.S. Indian Wars! It was collecting figures for a game of Custer's Last Stand that started me down the 54mm road.

My John Jenkins collection is about 3/4s of the way down page one. Before that are a few of my 54mm ACW troops. I also have a fair number of AWI painted, and a small collection of Old West type figs as well. I am also tempted by AiP's Sudan range. www.flickr.com/photos/79thpa/

Back in July 2013 I mounted a parade of my collection of metal Britains 54mm figures. Since then I have added a few more figures, including a whole load of cheap metal cavalry that was sold recently in branches of THE WORKS.

I've never seen those Britains Highlanders in sun helmets here in the U.S. I wish I could find some to swap heads with some Britains Mounties I bought to convert to Boer War era British lancers. The Mounties are otherwise perfect, just need a khaki paint job over their scarlet tunics.

At present my only 54mm collection that is painted is WW2 (US, German and USSR mostly. I do have some W. Britain's and Conte British paras that I use for 1:1 skirmish) . I have gamed using Disposable Heroes/Coffin for Seven Brothers, Nuts!, GASLIGHT, Blitzkrieg Commander, The Portable Wargame: Modern, One Hour Wargames WW2 rules, but lately, it's been mostly all Morschauser "Modern" rules all the time. Here's some older pictures of my German and US force. I've been moving to Solido and Corgi tanks and changing the infantry basing: Here's a picture from a recent game: Medieval (Russian-made plastic semi-flats) and AWI (mostly IMEX but I really want ATKM) are two projects I have figures for but haven't done more than paint 2 figures of each yet. VSF gaming in 54mm with GASLIGHT - presently my entire collection for that is 15mm gasp! - is also on the list of want-to-try. -John

Leaving childhood out, I started 54mm wargaming with the War of 1812 in 1995/6, just before the explosion of new plastics. That meant conversions and searching for old Airfix figures then rapidly adding BMC, marx recasts and Barszo. Some local friends got interested and soon it was ACW, AWI, Ancients and WWII in 54mm and I started the Yahoo Littlewars Group.
Then Stuart Asquith's column in Military Modelling led me to Soldier Pac and then I discovered a source of homecast molds that included some old Britain's copies and I was off on my old dream project ACW/Britain at war over the Trent incident/Fenian Raids. But I got sidetracked with Colonials......
Anyway I got sidetracked by life changes and in 2006 decided to downsize to 40mm. I parted with almost all of my plastic and newer metal 54s (still a few 1812 ones waiting to be touched up and sent looking for a new home). I just couldn't part with my old Britain's though, esp a few from my childhood and a collection that I bought from a widow whose husband had them since his childhood. I promised to cherish and enjoy them not lock them away. So what could I do?
I am back tinkering with 1860s & 70s Canada - US toy soldier games.

Ross, I have you to thank - or blame - for my conversion to 54mm. I found the attached photo particularly inspiring and I am now collecting figures for the Indian Mutiny so that I can enact it myself. Nick Attachments:

Ahhh the Emir's Lair. It saw many a fierce battle and was part of some great memories of games and friends. Foamcore fort, Hat Zouaves, CtA ECW gunners plus homecast Arabs from Dutkins, homecast Highlanders from Miniature Molds based on Authenticast figures I believe, also used with a bit of conversion, as Greek or Albanian mercenaries.
I wish you great joy in the games to come Nick. Hopefully we'll see some pics here?

Thanks Ross! BTW, I need some mid 19th Century British artillerymen. Are yours from some kind of Fort Henry collection?
