Played another game with the toys using my gridded adaptation of The Men Who Would Be Kings. A lot of vicious firefights in the woods and slow advances which matches the historical fight it was based on (an part of the Austro-Prussian battle of Koniggratz in 1866). portlandlittlewars.blogspot.com/2020/09/swiepwald-woods-or-something-like-it.htmlWanting to add a counter-fire mechanic (so that a unit that moves into range first is not disadvantaged), which made me look at Charge! again, which made me realize I could probably easily substitute TMWWBK's shooting/melee mechanics into Charge! easily (thus eliminating Charge's fractions of fractions stuff). The downside is that the whole pin/rally system would also have to junked, I think. Which would mean possibly adding some of Wells' surrender/prisoner-taking mechanics - something like, "if a unit charged is outnumbered by 2-to-1 or more, it will surrender." This would make it less risky to clear out units that have already taken heavy casualties. In a similar vein, units that are outnumbered 2-to-1 could not charge larger units. These would constitute a psuedo-rule for morale, as well. I've always thought Charge! was a really elegant system except for the fractions math thing for determining attack dice and casualties - I'd much rather refer to the "gridded Charge! adaptation" than the mouthful "gridded The Men who Would Be Kings adaptation"!

Looks good!
I have sometimes gotten around the fraction thing by either: >1/2 a group: full effect, less: nothing or rolling for stray figures 5,6 hit at close, 6 at long. The 1/2 casualties is enough work for my brain but it works when there are a lot of hits. Charge! Works even better when you are playing with a friend who can do fractions of fractions of indivisible numbers in his head.

Love Charge, and love the bright shiny look of your battles too.

Fractions, you say? *Shudders in decimal*
But that takes nothing away from this excellent-looking battle. Great stuff!
