Hello and good morning.
I have a few general questions regarding the setting up of a portable wargame playing surface as well as units.
1. What size squares do you use for 54mm?
2. Do you generally use units of 6 and keep track of strength points on a sheet of paper or with a marker? Or have you played that a sp 4 unit of infantry can be represented by 4 figures? Which do you prefer.
3. Can anyone provide a little detail into how they designed and built the portable wargame board they are using? I really like the looks of Mike Lewis's setup quite a bit. Cannot tell if its one piece, or if he uses a board with separate squares that he adjusts as needed?
Thank you very much

Hi Bradley
1. I use 4" - 100mm squares cut from MDF. 2. I use units of 6 infantry and 2-3 cavalry depending on wht will fit in a square. Neither Anthony nor I use strength points for our games - we usethe 'instant death' version where a unit saves and retreates or else is destroyed. It gives a faster more decisive game, we have found. 3. The board is made up from separate 4" tiles laser cut from plywood and mdf. The depth is 4mm which lets me cut a 2mm deep river. Most terrain features are one tile as well, though Fort Pippin made for the Salute game is 2 tiles square.
I also made and painted Anthony's 5" tile setup he uses for his Zulu Wars games.
Let me know if you have any other questions?
Mike

Hi Brad,
I suspect Mike would be overwhelmed with orders if he did market his tiles! Like you I love the look of his terrain and paint my bases to match. I have recently moved to mounting my 54mm on group bases rather than single figures; for one thing it feels right when playing what is essentially an element based game like PWG. Mike and I have tried the SP system a few times and it just made the game drag. Using sudden death gives you the fun of DBA without the fiddly geometry!
Cheers Anthony

One last thing. Have you thought about selling portable wargame boards and terrain I have been asked by a few people but I am not intending to make them generally available as a product. Partly I am really busy with Imperial Miniatures and my paint company Coat D'arms. But also, I only have one laser cutter and I don't want to commit to producing a product where I have a single point of failure (most of my equipment is doubled up). Plus, I really don't want to spend hours in front of a laser cutter! Mike

Ok so I made a terrain board but it is super heavy. I took 4 2 foot square pieces of particle board and screwed them together using 2x4s. I am not good with do it yourself, nor very handy. i over built it and its still sitting in my garage because I do not have space for it in my house and its too heavy to put on the dining room table...... Do you guys have any practicle ideas on how an everyday guy without a laser cutter could make one?
Like Anthony I really like Super Deetail troops. However Imperial miniatures are my dream that will soon become a reality. I tried prince august home cast but its such a mess and I cant manage to cut the vent lines right so one out of ever 6 tries ends up being decent. Cheaper and easier to just order from Mike I am thinking.
Thanks guys

Brad,
Mike sold Imperial Miniatures to Antony (not me-I have an 'h' in my name), who has the company up and running and will be very glad to receive your orders I'm sure! The figures are 'small' 54mm which makes them ideal for gaming. Much though I love my Little Legion Zulu War collection, the figures are large (nearer 60mm) which makes storage etc a little more challenging.
Best wishes Anthony

I'm starting a collection of 54mm Sudan figures -- Armies in Plastic. I'm building an Egyptian army and a Mahdist army. When done, I'll start on the British army. Can anyone suggest an army size to fit in with these rules, or doesn't it matter?
Any ideas of the size of armies anyone possesses and the make up of armies would be welcome. Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
I based my 54mm Zulu War collection on actual historical scenarios rather than 'standard' armies. Having said that, In some of Bob's PW rules he suggests that on an 8 x 8 grid eight to twelve units a side works well. His Clash of Empires' rules and his PW Colonial rules also include army lists for the Sudan and other wars which might help you.
Cheers Anthony
