Gents, I have been combining the tedium of lockdown with the tedium of re-basing. I am working through my 54mm and 40mm collections re-basing my figures on individual bases. This, combined with movement trays of all shapes and sizes should allow me to use any rules I fancy without too much hassle. I have just finished my ECW armies and have used bases 30mm frontage x 40mm depth for foot and 30mm x 80mm for horse. Call to Arms figures with their small footprint are great for this and allow more units on an average table. The photo shows units in trays 180mm x 80mm for use with Neil Thomas' one hour rules but on a 4' x 4' mat rather than 3' x 3'. Cheers Anthony

This photo shows smaller trays 120mm x 80mm designed for the Portable Wargame Pike and Shot rules using a 6 inch grid. Cheers Anthony

Looks good - I am assuming that this IS the FINAL rebasing :-)

Well done Anthony. Looking really good. Mine are based differently but I don't think that matters. I've used 40x40 for foot and 50x100 for horse. Re-basing is a pain (I've done it 4 times over the years with my 28mm Napoleonics), but It's well worth the effort when you arrive at that perfect solution. Look forward to seeing more photos

Thanks Dave-and yes this is the last time I will rebase my ECW Mike . Dave, I love your style of basing and I've always thought multiple 54mm figures on a base look good and have a wonderful feel to them. I have gone with single figure basing simply out of frustration at encountering rules that I like but which need different frontages to work as they are intended. Cheers Anthony

A splendid job Anthony, well done! A lot of thought and effort has gone into this and has been rewarded with an excellent outcome.

Such lovely figures that evoke the period.
Your clever basing system allowing three sets of rules to be played can only add to the fun.
I'm going to have to check out both the 1 hour and portable wargame rules. I painted a pikeman's lament army in 40mm for my adult son who took them to his tiny flat in Brighton and as yet to play a game with them after 3 years due to lack of room. Since each of his figures is single mounted with a magnetic base, it seems I would just need to provide him with some smaller steel paper covered trays for one of these other rule sets and he could then play on his 3'x5' dining table.

Patrick, thank you for your comments. Your son's basing system would certainly work as you described. The standard playing area for One Hour Wargames is 3' x 3' so 5' x 3' is more than adequate. The frontage for all units except skirmishers and artillery is 4-6 inches and each side only has a maximum of six units on table depending on the scenario, so you and your son will have no problems I'm sure. Out of interest, who made the 40mm ECW figures your son uses?

Thanks for the information on 1 hour wargames Anthony. I looked for the rules and saw Neil Thomas wrote them, I have Neil Thomas's Napoleonic Rules (but no figures) and like them so I have just ordered 1 hour wargames.
My son's English Civil War figures are irregular miniatures. Sorry just saw my mistake, they are 42mm not 40mm.

Cheers Patrick, good to know someone on the forum is using IM 42mm. I do like the breadth of their range and once had a small WW2 collection. When he has time Ian Kay is very good at adding to his 42mm and 54mm ranges on request.
