Just out of interest, and with Anthony mentioning the One Hour Wargames above, I read through these rules again. I found that I really like them, and with Old Father Time pursuing me now, I found that I really like the simplicity of them, yet also think that they will give a good game.
So, with this in mind, I wondered if I could ask the following question please. Has anyone used them to play big games with?
I see that the rules are meant for 4-6 units a side. What about bigger armies?
My 54mm Ancient armies have 27 Macedonian units and 39 Persian units. Is it feasible to think of using OHW to refight such a big game (I've already started to develop a rule for pikes, chariots and elephants, just in case!!!!)
My 54mm ECW army (the raising of which was inspired by Anthony's collection we played a game with at the Woking games day 3 years ago) has about 15 units a side, and (hopefully, one day) my 54mm Napoleonic armies will have about 20 units per side.
Do you think the Neil Thomas OHW rules would be suitable? - I can't see why they wouldn't (apart from a lot of note keeping) - and I just wondered if anyone has had experience of using them for a big game?
Thanks.
Best wishes Dave

Dave, Mike once told me of someone he knew that fought Waterloo in 2-3 hours with One Hour Wargames; all he had to add was simple morale rules as the normal scenario rules obviously didn't apply. I have a longstanding plan with Brian to play Gate Fulford with my 40mm Dark Ages Saxons and Vikings when we are free again to meet up. I will use historical orbats and either add special victory conditions in the spirit of the rules or add my own morale rules. I anticipate each side having 8-10 units so not too much of an increase. I think you could play larger battles OK. If you use mini-dice to mark each unit's attrition there will next to no record-keeping.
Cheers Anthony

As Anthony said, I don't see why it wouldn't work with large armies.
Perhaps add a simple command system (like PIP dice for each brigade commander, or use cards) and a simple morale system to work out when brigades break rather than fight to the death...
It should easily handle 20 units a side (if you have the space) and using micro-dice to mak the hits means there is no record keeping...

Just to say well done very nicely done. Large armies are great so I don't feel so bad when others show theirs, makes me feel more normal. For ECW A Call to Arms are they way to go. Love the movement bases, way to go.

Thanks for the input Anthony and Mike. Can't wait to give it a go. I'm having my jab on Saturday, so hopefully things will start to move again by the Summer and we can get back to games and shows.
Looking forward to the Woking games day in September? Will you be doing an ECW game Anthony?

Dave, I was originally planning a Zulu War game Dave, based on Kambula. I have to say that I'm now tempted to put on an ECW game, based on a historical battle. I will have to look at what battle might be suitable, although that will depend on what rules I use. If I use the PWG Pike and Shot rules I can abstract a large battle as each unit will only be 4 or 8 figures strong. On the other hand, if I use One Hour Wargames or Warhammer ECW the units will be larger so I would look at a smaller battle, like Brentford for example. I'll keep you posted!

Pat,
Mike will be along soon I'm sure, but you are certainly welcome to come to the Woking Games Day. Nearer the time Mike will be asking what games people are bringing or want to join in. So you're a metal detector! Have you seen the excellent sitcom 'Detectorists'? And well done on your find!
Cheers Anthony

Thanks Anthony,
I look forward to meeting you all if I can bribe Mike with a musket ball.
Regards
Pat
PS I have the detectorists on DVD, my wife finds it extra hilarious because it is very accurate.

That's great Mike. Any idea of a definite date yet for the Woking games day? Not yet - I need to wait until Christchurch sort out when they are reopening and what they are doing with room hire...

I like the look, well done. Having just purchased two armies of ACTA ECW it may be the way I go. What materials did you use for the individual bases ad the sabots/ Andrew in Oz

Hi Andrew,
Both the individual bases and the movement trays came from Warbases. You can practically order any size of base or tray you want from Warbases-they're excellent! I should add that the bases are made of 2mm mdf, although Warbases also sell acrylic bases.
Cheers Anthony
