Hi Martin,
One tip (if you haven't already done this) is to replace the bendy plastic pike with brass rods. I got mine from maverick Models as they came with spearheads (they're actually sold as flagpoles). This is assuming that you are using Call to Arms figures of course...
I have tried many rules for ECW. 'About Cromwell' is a set specifically written for 54mm figures and is a bit like the Command and Colours board games but without the hexes. I like the rules but they're not to everyone's taste. There is also the new Portable Wargame Pike and Shot rules. They use a square grid and come with two sets of rules, both of which capture the important elements of the ECW. Like all PWG rules they are very playable and fun. there is also Tabletop Battles, which also uses a square grid and which I am using for my ECW game based on a historical battle at the Woking Games Day in a few weeks time. TB is like DBA but without the fiddly geometry. It also uses a D12 which means there can be more granularity between troop types and tactical situations. It includes rules for setting up a standard game (which lasts 8 turns) and includes terrain set up rules. There are many other ECW rules out there but most would require a lot of space for 54mm as lots of figures are usually required, and often they're too complex in my opinion:)
Cheers Anthony

Thanks Tony . Yes A call to arms figures . Not much else really . May do some metals for command etc . Was thinking of metal spears but I really like the detail on the plastic ones . May try to combine the two . I have About Cromwell on its way and have Pike and Shotte . Ill try both out whilst painting .

Hi,
I use the plastic pikes that come with the sets because they have the detail of the metal fixing and nails on them and look great.
Hot/cold water treatment to begin with. Yes, they are a bit bendy, but I think they look great - and you don't get your hands pricked by the metal points!!!!!
But, each to their own

Hi hope you enjoy 54mm English Civil War as much as myself. As suggested by others have replaced the plastic pikes with metal rods which work well. For rules I use Warhammer ECW rules which work well for 54mm and leave the distances as per the rules. The hedgehog rules are just mad so have my shot joining the pike (if they choose) as one unit and left to the fate of the pike block. Have introduced powder rules which are fun and helps the feel of the period. Lockdown has slowed my gaming so no ECW but lately others have showed an interest so fingers crossed. Like the idea of Pike and Shot rules could well give them a go. If you go back on this site you will see a few pictures of my 54mm ECW battle. One thing about A call to Arms is their very good value, easy to paint and a joy to paint. Attachments:
