Mine is in the post-naturally in hardback format! I'm very interested in the whole 3 x 3 idea. The smaller number of squares/hexes on the playing area, the larger each grid area can be, which will make it easier to fit 54mm units, terrain etc into each area.

Oddly I feel completely ambivalent about the 3 x 3 idea and it really doesn't interest me... I am quite happy with the larger number of squares which provides a farly quick game anyway.

I haven’t tried the 3x3 yet but will give it a go. I had been mulling over the idea of an area game, as opposed to a grid game eg that unit is in the woods, that unit is at the ford, that unit is in the western side of the field and so forth. I think Ganesha Games did a ruleset like that?

The possibility of larger grid spaces is my primary interest in 3x3, although I have found the whole 3x3 phenomenon thought provoking. While it's unlikely to become my primary choice, 4x4 might, as I consider expanding to an 8" grid space for WWII - fitting armor/vehicles and terrain into a space is a tight fit at best, even when using underscale vehicles, on my 6" grid, never mind trying to use two tanks per unit.

I have found the 3x3 layout with flank and reserve areas provides an absolutely surprising amount of tactical options. I was skeptical at first but my first play-through gave me pause when I had to make my first move. With such tight confines, every move really matters. Even which flank to exploit was a tough choice because both had their benefits and drawbacks. Physically larger spaces would allow you to use larger models for sure but there are a lot of options in such a small game.
