I currently base my 54mm gaming figures on 2p coins, which are heavy enough to stop them falling over all the time on the table, and gives a more uniform look to figures made by differing manufacturers. This has the advantage of letting me use the figures individually (for H G Wells style games) or mounting them in MDF sabots from Warbases.com when larger numbers are employed.
The sabots work well enough as they are cut to fit 2p pieces but the figures sometimes fall out, especially in transit to a game, the 2p coins will stick to anything magnetic and I think I have heard of gamers using magnetised steel sheet to mount/transport figures, has anyone else come across this and do you know of a supplier?

I stumbled onto a bunch of great youtube tutorials for magnetic miniatures storage: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp_f232DSygThey seem to rely on attaching individual magnets to the minis though.

Brian, my friend Rob has stored and transported his figures this way for years. He mounts his figures on washers or on bases lined with paper steel on the bottom and lines his travelling containers with magnetic sheet. He has really good luck with it, especially for plastic figures.
FWIW I've tried to copy it with extremely poor results. (which says more about me than the system)
