In the late eighteenth century, before the rise of those upstart Frenchmen, western Europe was anything but united. Anyone who might dream of a great European union, was obviously mad and probably a radical. But change was in the wings and I thought, what a perfect setting for a war (an imaginary one, of course). The time frame should be after the Seven Years War, but before the French Revolutionary Wars. Historically, there was the Spanish-Portuguese War, or perhaps the War of Bavarian Succession ("The Potato War"). But the map of the Holy Roman empire was just too tempting. It had to be Germany. So, a new campaign evolved: The War of Franconian Succession. The troops were already painted, thanks to my AWI games with large Hessian/Brunswick contingents. There were the my Irish Brigade in Spanish service, a few odd Frenchmen of the Royal Army, and bunches of Brits. Oddly enough, I had painted up the three Kreis regiments of the Franconian Circle, complete with standards! As for rules, Dirk Donvil's About Bonaparte had a Seven Years war and AWI supplements.
With summer fast waning, the cool, rainy, and occasionally miserable months of autumn and winter here in New England are fast approaching. It's time to go on campaign!
I invite you to follow the progress on my blog Der Resin Kavalier (https://derresinkavalier.blogspot.com).
