Question for my UK fellow members: I would like to visit the UK in the coming year and focus on visiting the NAM and the Imperial War Museum in London and then a selection of regimental museums, including the Royal Green Jackets and Gurkha Museums in Winchester and the Royal Welsh Regiment in Brecon. I don't want to rent a car and drive, so my question is whether it will be practical to reach the non London museums by public transport? Do you know if there are any package sight seeing trips that concentrate on military museums?
Thanks, Nick Stern

Hi Nick,
Winchester and Brecon can certainly be reached by train; I must admit I have never come across any military museum package tours-sadly!
Best wishes Anthony

Hi Nick, The nearest station to Brecon is 20 miles south east at Abergavenny. Abergavenny connects to the London-Wales main train line at Newport.
However I live nearby at Ross-on-Wye so I would be happy to give you a lift by car between Abergavenny and Brecon.
regards
Pat

Winchester well worth a visit, spent many happy hours in the Gurkha archive.
Gloucester is a good one two, in the old docks, easy by train and a short walk from the station.
Dorchester used to be good but not been for years.
Liverpool another pretty good one.
Portsmouth for RN and RMLI, the latter a bit of a hike from station but all along the sea front.

Mike,
Thanks for the additional recommendations! Searching online, I see there's a Royal Lancers Museum in Derby. Might be worth a visit?

Sadly not really. From memory it is a couple of cases in the city museum. That said I live near Derby so if you do venture this far into the Arctic Circle pm me so we can meet.
