Yes, but if this is the film, these are USMC in Peking? Great film but 1900 and not very historically accurate.

Looks great! That color scheme worked for Chuck Heston.
Thanks! Yeah the turn of the century saw a lot of variations. The RRs apparently had to buy their own uniforms (and they would be reimbursed $7). Unfortunately, those uniforms were brown. Not even khaki. Just brown lol. It seems they were often poorly made and didn't smell very good. I just went with a drabbish brown for these trousers. Thankfully the climate dictated they leave the coats behind, and went into action in just their blue fatigue shirt, thus still looking cowboy chic lol --John

A Spanish infantryman from Armies in Plastic, Spanish American War. The rayadillo uniform is a challenge. While the folks at Team Miniatures blew my mind with their literal interpretation, it's not something I'd like to try over the course of a few dozen miniatures. So Im trying to just "suggest" the effect of the fine stripes at a distance. View AttachmentLovely job! Personally, I would not try to paint the white lines as, at this scale, everything blends into one shade. When people do the 'stripes' they are generally way out of scale. However, this impression works very well.

Much like the film, Zulu, 55 Days at Peking is riddled with inaccuracies, but those two films, along with Khartoum, are what introduced me to a lifelong interest in the Victorian colonial period. I am thankful they were made.
And, sometimes, it's okay to mix a little Hollywood with history on the game table.

Your Spaniard is, indeed, a masterful paint job! As for the Rough Rider, you made a possibly awkward color scheme work incredibly well. Will these be display pieces or used in gaming? Cheers, Jeff

Cheers, Jeff Thanks Jeff! Definitely plan to use them for gaming. Initially plan to simply paint a set of RR and a set of Spanish (after converting the officers' hats), then skirmish with them a bit a la "Las Guasimas". After that, I'd like to assemble enough suitable models representing different units, most notably the 10th Cavalry and indigenous Cuban forces. This may end up requiring a good deal of hunting and/or converting. The BMC 10th Cav may be too oddly inaccurate to be salvageable (what's with all the bandoleers?). My real goal is to be able to play "Men Who Would Be Kings" both Americans vs. Spanish and Spanish vs. Cuban rebel forces, prior to American involvement. But I'm not sure yet whether there are enough models out there to do that. In the meantime, I just hope to get enough done to skirmish with, and find some good options for the 10th

I actually haven't yet. It's on my watchlist, and I was planning to start it this weekend, but unfortunately haven't had any time. Definitely soon, though!

The AIP RR have carbines, Boxer US have rifles, so I'd go for the latter. isn't there a Teddy in the RR set already? Marx did one too, mounted I IIRC. So I was able to find a Marx Recast Teddy and Texas. Turns out they're fairly collectible these days, but I managed to find one for a decent price. Almost feel bad prepping and painting them.....almost..... Thanks again for the tip, Mike! --John Attachments:

Great looking figures! The Spanish soldier goes beyond outstanding. As for the American, simple and plain (at least for field uniforms) has pretty much always been the rule.
