A Spanish infantryman from Armies in Plastic, Spanish American War. The rayadillo uniform is a challenge. While the folks at Team Miniatures blew my mind with their literal interpretation, it's not something I'd like to try over the course of a few dozen miniatures. So Im trying to just "suggest" the effect of the fine stripes at a distance.

Excellent work! Definitely gives the impression of narrow blue and white stripes like mattress ticking or, well, spanish tropical cotton uniforms.
How did you do it? Ross

Excellent work! Definitely gives the impression of narrow blue and white stripes like mattress ticking or, well, spanish tropical cotton uniforms. How did you do it? Ross Thanks Ross! The uniforms are based in VMC Pale Grey-Blue, and then shaded with GW Nuln Oil, Drakenhof Nightshade, and thinned with Lahmian Medium. Then the Pale Grey-Blue was reclaimed, leaving the shadows. The raised areas were highlighted with VMC Ghost Grey. Finally, I thinned down VMC Dead White to be very loose. Using a fresh "O" brush, I added light white stripes at the more raised areas, or surfaces that get a lot of light, in quick downward strokes, just letting the tip of the brush catch the intended area. That's about it. I tried to keep it simple, knowing I'd be painting quite a few of them. Hope this helps, thanks again for the kind words all -- John

John,
You call that simple? It's a masterpiece! My own painting technique tops out at "toy soldier style".
I'd love to see how you handle your Americans!

I'm trying out the first Rough Rider now (also from AIP), and have to admit it's a bigger challenge than the rayadillo. I think I'm having a hard time with the idea of brown pants, a blue shirt, and tan hat. I mean, from a fashion perspective it's a train wreck lol. I'll be happy to work on some blue on light blue regulars asap. --John

Just beautiful! It's hard to believe that began life as a solid colored plastic AiP figure!

Cheers Mike! Turns out I am a bit stuck and could use your expertise in the period. What are your thoughts on modelling the US Regulars? Do you think the AIP Boxer rebellion Americans would pass muster, or should I just do AIP Rough Riders and give them blue pants? I was thinking of using an AIP Boxer Rebellion American officer to lead the Rough Riders I'm painting now, given there's a bit of leeway in what officers wear, especially of volunteer units. Other than that I just need to come up with a conversion for Teddy & Texas! Thanks again -- John

The AIP RR have carbines, Boxer US have rifles, so I'd go for the latter.
isn't there a Teddy in the RR set already?
Marx did one too, mounted I IIRC.
