I’m late to this particular party, but does anyone have any recommendations for models that would represent civilian/irregular soldiers? I have seen some lovely paint jobs on Airfix etc. soldiers to represent regular soldiers, but some variety would not go amiss. I was wondering about using milliput to change up some figures but being effectively blind and one fingered (it just seems like it) I would like to see if there are easier (lazy) options out there?

I used a mix of Army in Plastic Boers and any other odds and sods I had lying around - tried to give them vaguely uniform nature to represent a militia of sorts - a change of command group gives you options for the various factions - hope that helps - atb Tim

Take a look at the Lemax ranges. They do lots of Victorian era civilians, as well as some more modern types. Some lend themselves to conversion but the 'resin' they are cast in is not as friendly to manipulation as plastic.
At the moment, in most places, the Lemax Xmas ranges are 'on sale', so it is a good time to buy. ie reduced price until the season starts again (probably July!)

Check the Irregular Miniatures Spanish Civil War series. Also, ESCI made a set of European Partisan s in 1/35 which fit well with Airfix WW2 figures. I am using them for Israelis in 1947.

The stalwart Plastic Warrior Mexican peasants by Steve Weston might be convertible too. I found Lemax figures on the often big slightly larger than 54mm size compared to Airfix.

manoftinblog is right, Lemax do vary in size from c54 to c60mm and the thick bases do not help. But the bases can be removed, and the taller figures reduced in size by a judicious slice through the middle or top the the legs.
