We played a fun WW1 trench raid game at my club over the weekend. The rules were published in Wargames Illustrated Issue 235. I often find rules in magazines lacking some vital details, but these were pretty complete. The rules are fast playing but allow things like the throwing back and forth of hand grenades, which provided some great moments. With only ten figures a side, we had time to play the game twice. Each time it looked like the German attackers were going to triumph, but in both games the British rallied and were able to drive off the attackers. Attached are some photos of the games.

That looks great - where are the trench sections from?

I bought mine from Atherton Scenics on eBay. Free shipping in the US. Expensive shipping elsewhere.

Very effective scenery and well painted figures, it looks a fun game to play in. Do you know if the company does other 54mm scale terrain pieces?

Hi Don,
I've just got back from holiday so only now have I seen your pics. Fantastic! I will get a copy of WI issue 235 myself and look into getting some trench sections from Atherton.
Best wishes Anthony

Tradgardmastre, the company makes some great multi-scale rock formations, earthworks with gabions, bombed out buildings, Zulu huts, American Indian lodges, etc. Lots of useful stuff!

Hi Nick,
I just wondered how you converted the grid aspect of the rules to your trench sections as the latter are not marked off in squares?

Hi Anthony,
I just measured one inch in place of one grid square. Same with the grenade spider. It seemed to work out fine. Four or eight inches, moving along the trench, may seem short for 54mm, but it actually felt right.
Best, Nick
