Good to hear from you Eric. I’ve also got a 54mm ACW project on the go using various manufacturers e.g. AIP, Italeri, Accurate, IMEX etc. There used to be loads of plastic figure sets available a few years ago but it seems to be increasingly difficult to get them now - the moral of that is, don’t put off your purchases, get them while they’re available! Third Rule of Wargaming = 'Buy it when you see it!'

Hi everyone. I’m new here, having slipped in off the back of The Portable Wargame, Tradgarland and Quantrill’s Toy Soldiers. I’ve been gaming in 15mm for a couple of years, but Quantrill’s blog showed me how versatile 54mm figures can be, ripe for customisation. I get a thrill out of rummaging through charity shops and eBay, looking for a hidden gem (soldier or toy) I can spruce up and include in a game. My main interest is fantasy, and I’ve just started a thread in that area where I’ll document my miniatures and games. I also love reading and writing rules for games, especially skirmish and RPG level. I’ll post some links to my rules soon.

It is, of course, all Alan Gruber's fault. Having persuaded Eric to join the group, he's been able to turn his attention to eliminating any resistance (laziness) I might have had even though I must confess to lurking for some time. Like many people here I've been a lifelong, but intermittent, wargamer. I've dabbled in everything from 6mm to 54mm and ancients to Vietnam (I still have my original Western Gunfight and Colonial Skirmish rules). Following retirement nearly three years ago I decided to concentrate on the 1740s in 28mm and life was happy; I was content. But there is always the butterfly. A desire to do something a little less complicated. Not to worry about how much detail to paint on a grenadier cap (the answer is actually very little but you know what I'm getting at). Anyway, where to go from here? Obviously 54mm! Has to be metal "toys". Unpainted (unless I win the lottery). I have the occasional urge to do medieval but it'll probably be anything I fancy between 1850 and 1918. So back to planning, daydreaming and studying the site. And looking forward to fun times! Ronnie

Ronnie; Oh it's good I've seen this post before I've made my landing in Edinburgh...
Did I mention how the American Civil War in 54mm is eminently suitable for The Portable Wargame and other fine rules...even Sharp Practice.
The plastics are easy to paint (or not) and are cheap as chips.
Just trying to be helpful, of course. :-)
Cheers; Eric

Hi,
I did something of an intro in expressing an intro to go along to the Woking day but I thought that I'd (belatedly) also put something here. Hi,
My 54mm gaming has been sporadic but goes back to the 1970s, playing western gunfights inspired by Mike Blake & co. Some years back a friend and I collected together a couple of ‘armies’ to play Little Wars. These were a mix of old Britains/Herald and Armies in Plastic with a number of matchstick cannons purchased from ebay. We had a lot of fun but British weather isn’t that kind to playing outdoors so some games took place indoors.
I've been gaming for about 54 years, starting off with Don Featherstone's books. I mainly game use smaller figures – 6, 15, 25/28mm – but attracted by the Spencer-Smith range of figures and the photos on Aly Morrison’s website I’ve assembled a couple of 42mm armies based on end of 19th century British and French. I’m using A Gentlemen’s War which is a lot of fun. I also still have a certain amount of the western gunfight and ‘little wars’ kit in 54mm and keep admiring the larger figures I see in use on various blogs, particularly Battle Game of the Month’. So I’m looking to acquire some more for a small set up. Inspired by Ross' games and several articles in wargaming magazines over the years I've settled on the Fenian raids into Canada, particulary in the 1860s.
My thanks to all for such a warm welcome at the Woking day and the inspiring games. I have a clash in my diary for the Plastic Warrior show but I'm going to the London Toy soldier show which should be great for seeing what's available (that I probably can't afford!.
Brian Cameron (another BrianC as I discovered on the replacement bus service to Woking when I met up with Brian Carrick)

Hello everyone, I am John Lawrence from Brisbane Australia and am very pleased to find this forum. About myself I have been playing solo wargaming using 1/35th figures, weapons and vehicles since 1970 and I have accumulated a large collection of model kits, so am I a modeller that likes wargaming or a wargames that likes making model kits. I have tried many rules systems over the years from Tractics and WRG to Flames of War and finally I am trying Bolt Action. I have a 4 foot by 6 foot games table consisting of hexes approx. 12 inches across on which I set up my terrain scenery. I am having trouble finding buildings and scattered terrain so I build my own. I will try to add some photos to my next post.

Have you tried the Portable Wargame rules?
