Hi, I know people will get fed up with me keep mentioning Expeditionary Force figures, but they're really well sculpted. If WW2 is your thing, then I'd recommend you looking at them. They're brilliant. You can find them on www.expeditionaryforce.com.sgBest Wishes Dave P.S. No I don't have shares in the company!!!!!!!

Hi Dave,
I'm sure no one's fed up-that's what a forum like this is for! Although most of my 54mm WW2 figures are Airfix I bought X-Force German mortars and HMGs as for some reason Airfix only made British support weapons (except for a PIAT-really annoying!).
I have to confess that I may well use metal figures for my next 54mm period (either Barons Wars or Romans) after all but as no one does any sensibly priced Jacobite Rebellion metal 54mm figures I may well use X-Force figures when they bring out that particular range.
Thanks for keeping the rest of us informed!
Best wishes Anthony

Nice. What rules do you use?

The new grid-based Airfix Rules. They come with unit cards for sections, support weapons, officers etc and the mechanics of the game itself is card driven. The game works very well and the rules comes with scenarios and a mini-campaign but there hasn't much extra support material put out yet.

Hi,
I've had some new information from Scott Lam of Expeditionary-Force to say that they plan to do some WW2 Pacific sets sometime in 2018. They're also planning some supplementary sets for WW2 ( late war Germans).
Best Wishes Dave

Bumping this because I would also extol the virtues of the XFo WWII figures. What impresses me particularly about XFo's releases is the thoroughness with which the topic is covered. I decided to do my American figures as Free French, in the Adrian helmets option, and my Germans as 'Brandenburgers', with them all in caps. Yet to take some proper photos, will post when I have done so. We use the Bolt Action rules, which work fine with 54mm. Attachments:

I'm not too fussy about exact scale, but how do X-Force Americans compare size wise with say Airfix or Matchbox? And do you chaps buy direct from them?

They are a tad bigger - they are branded as 1/30th 60mm IIRC. But we use them with all the other makes and guess what - you cannot see the difference once all the figures are out on the table.
I buy from Steve Weston, plastictoysoldiers.uk.co; nice guy, great service and fast, and he has all the figures from all the makers. If you deal direct with Scott Lam at ExFo, you risk import duty etc on a large order, but you can get little extras from him. For example, I want to do the rest of my French as FFL, in kepis, and he's sold me some to do this with.

Thanks Mike, I forgot to ask if they come as kits (I guess they do with the lifelike poses I can see on the website). I buy a reasonable amount from Mr. Weston, but may buy a set direct to test the water.

Some are pre-assembled, but most now are in pieces. Headgear and head are separate; body and legs one piece, armes separate is the norm. I love this, because conversion is made easier. Parts are not designed to be fully interchangeable, as arms have plugs which are shaped to fit specific sockets, but this is easily fixed. I was able to rearm (literally) my German Brandenburgers with American arms and therefore weapons.

I appreciate this helps with conversion, but I often feel that Toy Soldiers are no longer toys or can stand up to the rigours of play (this is particularly true of 1/72 figures which increasingly need assembling) and there is a dwindling supply of figures suitable for kids and outdoor use. Still, I may get some anyhow as they do look rather nice.

Once they are stuck with superglue, they will take any amount of play!
