We played Lion Rampant on a gridded table, and the combination of Lion Rampants' mechanics and the grid produced a very enjoyable 54mm game. I fielded as many units as possible this time around, with 13 units to each side.

I agree with Anthony, really stunning! Where did you get the spears the Turks are using?

Wonderful. Your posts have inspired me so much that I'm having to resist the temptation to dive into a Medieval collection. Thank you, I think! The only thing I'd add are some trees and maybe a hill or two - just to shake things up - to your table. Please keep us posted on your next outing!

I have plenty of terrain, I just wanted to get rules that felt right for 54s figured out first, and then I was trying out this grid thing for the first time, too!

That looks great - I am really tempted to buy some 54mm plastic medievals... I was always taken by the sort of rules, such as in Practical Wargaming, where you roll for each commander to see what turns up and build the forces from that.

I have to send a complaint. I've liked the look of the Expeditionary Force Mediaeval figures for ages, but have always been able to resist as I have so many projects on the go. Then you go and do this, spencercf, and rekindle my desire for Mediaeval figures!!!!!!
You'll be hearing from my solicitors and bank manager forthwith!!!!!!!
A great display and great idea. Hope we get to see more shots if you play another game Best Wishes Dave

I have to agree with Dave. My ever shaky resolve (NOT to get into a new period!) has taken a severe beating with this thread. Must...be...strong...
Lion Rampant is a great game. I've had tremendous fun doing Conquistadors vs Maya/Aztec/Inca with it!

This figure collection took at least 5 years to build up, usually involving me coming up with some idea to use specific rules but then flaming out without any figures actually gracing a tabletop. And then, rather suddenly, I had a rather large horde! The worst thing about 54mm medievals is that its very difficult to go about army building in any systematic way. Exp.Force is probably the best b/c they have every figure type you could want and although pricey at least its consistent so you could budget accordingly. Everything else is a horrible mishmash of different styles, sizes, and historicity. In the end you have to hold your nose and just pretend its a Hollywood version of the middle ages.

Spencer,
I share your pain re the inconsistency of 54mm medieval toy soldiers. Incredibly the Deetail range of medievals was deliberately designed not to be historically consistent!! I am currently trying to collect the Second Barons' War in 54mm by using timpo knights as they are consistently 13th century in design except for the kite shields which are too early, but which I will replace with heater shields from Irregular Miniatures.
Cheers Anthony
