Anyone aware of decent 54mm Normans or other mailed troops? I'd like to do a book-accurate army of Gondorian soldiers from Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's descriptions include no plate mail.

Call to Arms does a set of foot Normans (4 poses, all with swords) that look a little flat but painted examples I've seen look alright.

The shields are separate though, right? I like CTA sculpting generally, it's a shame they didn't do any spearmen.

The poses are such that I think you could easily convert the swords to spears.

I was interested to read Anthony’s comment about the Deetail range being built deliberately inconsistent, why was such a decision taken?

Hi Alan,
I read this in a book on the history of Britain's toy soldiers that I know some forum members also own. The sculptor was instructed to design a range of armour styles covering the whole medieval period rather than concentrate on one particular period such as the 100 years war, for example. It baffles me why this decision was made; the previous Heralds knights were for the 100 years War and Timpo knights were early medieval (13th c mainly), perfect for the Barons Wars etc. It's a real shame about Deetail because I actually love the general style of figure!
Best wishes Anthony

Well they were/are for kids remember, not collectors or military historians. One day mine were crusaders, the next the Round Table, the next... I had no idea that anything changed between the 100 Years war and the Baron's Wars and vice versa - I'd never heard of them! But I was only 8.
I'd venture it makes perfect business sense to make figures which will have the widest possible appeal?

Fair enough Mike, but I'm pretty sure Herald and Timpo knights were made for kids too and yet they went to the trouble of getting the look right. Perhaps they were being educational:). On a more positive note I see from Spencer's photos that he is the fortunate owner of some of those excellent upgraded/revamped Deetail knights from Argentina. I wish they weren't so difficult to get hold of in the UK.

I'm not sure when production fully stopped but its certainly much much later than Herald or Timpo. The result is that you can find many offers on Deetail knights that make ahistorical armies, while Timpo and Herald are more rare and go for higher prices.

Thanks for your interesting comments and discussion. I still recall the Herald box set of knights and archers I was given as a boy , sadly long since gone.
