I've been mulling over basing the last few days. I get the impression most people use singles figure bases, or perhaps even keep the figure on its own integral base. I think in many cases the latter option is too prone to going prone, but I can see the utility of having single based figures. For skirmishes and sieges and the like.
I've been mounting my Dungeon-crawl figures on 50mm rounds, to which I am adding the Renedra stone work rounds as an overlay. It turns out the integral base of the figures is about as thick as the Renedra stonework bases. I decided to go with 50mm as a representation of the area the fighter needs to function unobstructed. If bases have to be overlapped or tilted because they can't quite fit I will impose a penalty unless using short weapons like daggers or fists.
But I also want to do large battles and I know from experience that moving single figures for those can slow the game down. So I've been mulling over multiple figure bases.
If you guys use them, what size d you go with. I have some 4" x 5" bases made from 3mm MDF. They were from a bin of off-cuts a dealer was selling off at a convention. I've had them about ten years and now I'm thinking I'll finally get to use them for something. I was looking on the Warbases site and they do Imperial sized bases, but for some reason don't go as big as 5" wide. 4.5" or 4.75" is the widest they list. i.e. 4" x 4.5"
They also have terrain bases which are large and slightly irregular. The so-called "pond bases" might work for warbands. A lot of rules use the number of bases in a unit as part of the game mechanisms, for example Soldiers of Rome compares the number of disorder counters to the number of bases and the unit routs if it still has more of one than the other at end of turn. I've been looking at SoR as a potential set of rules to use but am thinking I don't need to have four bases per cohort as per the rules. I could use a single base and give it a "Breakpoint" of "4". In the rules bases are not removed, just whole units, so the use of bases to indicate this is purely arbitrary in the first place.
The mulling continues...
